Hi there. Ive currently got quite a bad problem with exchange that im trying to fix. Ive found a hotfix that exactly describes our problem:

so i rang MS, got the hotfix and tried to install it.

When I run it, I get the error message:

"setup has detected that the build version of the system installed does not match the update you are applying to it. you can install this update on exchange 2000 build 4417 only."

Anyone got any ideas what this is? or how I can get around it, the hotfix is becomming pretty desperate and im all out of ideas.

Thanks

May I suggest at first to call them back, as they provided you with fix. If it does not work, you are entitled to get additional support.

Hi there. The thing is, that hotfix you usually have to pay for it £200 for the call etc. Basically on the phone they said if this doesnt work, we will be charged for support.

I also had this problem with other updates I found on the Microsoft website, ie exchange 2000 sp3 post rollups. I ran that, and had exactly the same problem :s

Still, call them back and ask, again, about the support options. It sounds weird they would charge you for a hotfix, especially if it does not work!

Anothe thing, you may want to re-apply SP3 and see what happens.

Hi there.

Ive just checked my server properties (right click My Computer) and the build version I think is: 5.00.2195

Can this be updated without reinstalling Exchange?

Anyway, I did try reinstalling SP3, and ran the Microsoft Exchange 2000 SP Installation Wizard.

I clicked the action to Update and as soon as i do, i get the error message:

The component Microsoft Exchange 2000 cannot be assigned the action "update" because: you cannot use this edition of Microsoft Exchange to update a more recent version.

:s

Any ideas about that?

Thanks again for the help

yeah i'd read over that before, but im not using the SMTP reinstall tool, or isnt that what you mean?

I just want to be able to install SP3 again(overwriting the existing setup) or be able to install other hotfixes, unless I'm getting confused by what you mean?

Cheers again

Well, a bit of both, but it may be worth to try and reinstall the SMTP since that is the part you have problems with.
Sorry I am not able to pinpoint exactly what the issue is, but after all, we can only read here, not see your server ;-)

Well, as a bit of background info, the problem we were initially/still having was:

Emails were getting stuck in the Exchange Queue, for ages, closer inspection by looking in the event viewer system log showed masses of errors, ie:

Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for a transaction response from the W3SVC service.
Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for a transaction response from the SMTPSVC service.
Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for a transaction response from the RESvc service.
Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for a transaction response from the POP3Svc service.
Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for a transaction response from the IMAP4Svc service.
Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for a transaction response from the IISADMIN service.

also, none of the related services would restart and so on, and the only way to fix this error is to reboot the server, which is far from ideal.

Have you ever come across that before?

Do you think by reinstalling the SMTP service if thats what you mean, would allow me to re-install SP3, or be able to install the other hotfixes?

Apreciate the help so far :)

All I am saying at this moment is to try the SMTP reinstall, if it does not solve anything, it does not hurt to try.

Another realted issue can bee IIS itself, but we'll tackle that later if needed.
Go one step at the time, don't try to force things or you will not know where you came from and where you end up.

just a quick update/more info. We're still having problems with our emails, but its acting slightly different now.

If i send an email from one of our client PC's, it hangs in the outbox a lot longer than normal, and then goes, and usually its instant(ie sending from account: test to account test) the process would take 2 seconds ish. But now, its holding in the outbox for 15 seconds.

I then check the email queues with exchange pop3, and theres no emails in the queues, any of them.

I then check the services and theres no stopped services, and I then check the event viewer for system logs and theres no errors. So the problem is still there, even though a bit different than normal.

The emails then arrive in to the inbox about 10 minutes later(but the Received time states(the correct time I sent it) ie:

Sent: 10:10
received: 10:20
Received Tab on Outlook shows: 10:10

Any ideas to that?

Ok, 'normally' POP3 will not contain anything unless you specifically use that. Internal mail does not use that at all.
In general, what you describe is more a respons issue, which could be caused by incorrect client settings, check that first, that's the easy part. IP, subnet, Default Gateway and DNS MUST be correct, or any Exchange traffic will be awfully slow.

Check if this is the case on every PC, if so, it is a general issue (server or maybe a defective hub or router), if not, compare the settings of the clients.

Run perfmon.
Look at ave disk queue length (read and write), IOPS, processor and memory.

Check the duplexing on the server - manually set the speed to whatever it ought to be. So for instance set the card to gigabit full duplex. Update the network drivers.
Next, go to Client for Microsoft Networks on the network stack. Uninstall it. Restart. Reinstall it. Restart.

Then report back any progress.
