Unable to start SQL Server Agent (for use with replication)

When I try to start SQL Server agent I get the following error: "The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion". What is this? I tried to look it up on the web and found something about a bug in windows. What should I do with the replication thingy? I mean, I'm in the progress of enabling replication and I suppose the Agent must be started to achieve this. Have anyone else run into this reporter error?

I solved this. It is caused when the Agent didn't have adminsitrator privilegies.

Hiya,

Got the same error myself. However, even though I have set the agent to log in as the administrator of the local machine and allowed the administrator to "act as part of the operating system" and "log on as a service", I still get the error.

On an associated note, is there any way to get the agent to automatically start when the server is started, irrespective of whether it is started within the Services panel or Enterprise Manager?

Any help greatly appreciated.

I also get an error when trying to start the SQL Server Agent, but this is an internal nt error 2140, the event log says:
30/11/00 09:32:16 SQLServerProfiler Error Internal Error 998 N/A LEMON Executable : C:\MSSQL7\binn\sqlservr.exe

Any ideas?

It looks like the agent account you are using doesn't have the permissions to write to the registry...

Has anyone experienced random incidences of SQL Server Agent service stopping by itself? I discover a tape backup did not execute and usually, the service has mysteriously stopped.
