I have an access mdb with linked tables - not for data editing - just reporting. Currently using a machine DSN, though I want to move to a file DSN - but that's another issue. :)

Being a cautious person, I have multiple versions - new version for every change.

Previous versions are shareable between my computer and another at work.

Current version is NOT shareable. If it is open on mine first, the other workstation gives the message that the database cannot be locked. If it is open on the other first, I could multiple messages of "you don't have exclusive access" which eventually go away and allow me to use it.

I checked Tools/Options comparing current version to previous - everything is identically. Both the other user and I have Admin rights on our local boxes.

This came up because this system is implemented elsewhere in the state and suddenly they can only open it one person at a time. BUT the version they have IS one that I can share at my office.

Is this a networking problem? I'm going a little crazy now.

You automatically open the database exclusive if you start working in design mode on forms, reports, or modules (not sure about macros). The best way to share a front end is to give each person their own copy and find a way to have it look for new versions when the person opens it.

Please let me know if I can provide more assistance.

I understand what you are saying, but it's not truly what's happening in our situation. Here's a better (much longer) picture:

SQL Server database with a VB.Net front end, 7 locations. Access for reporting contains linked tables to the server, queries and reports, a form with buttons to all the reports.
The users do not have permissions to use design view.

The .Net program has a button to open the reporting tool. A data field holds the path to the reports (saved in network location).

This has worked for over a year. Only now is this inability to share a database occuring. I tested it at my location, literally running back and forth between computers to have multiple instances open.

I hope this clarifies.
