Hello:
I have Thinkpad 2621 Celeron processor(400MHZ) with 128MB of RAM, 3.2GB of HDD free space running on W2k pro. I went to Performance Option set 500MB both for mini and max but after booting up the Virtual Memory still default to 20MB.

Help :)

Thanks

Try posting in the XP forum, this does not sound like a hardware problem. Someone there could probably help more...

Did you defrag the drive?
It wants the virtual memory to be in a contiguos block, so if you don't have a large enough block available it will size itself to what it finds.

One other trick is to set it to 0 before doing the defrag, then reset it after.

Thanks, Bobg1
I'll defrag the drive.

Hi Bobg1
I set the virtual memory to 0MB on both the min and max then I defrag the HDD. As I sign new value 300MB on both the min and max then clik OK, a pagefile.sys message dialog box appear asking if I want to overwrite the current pagefile.sys file. I click yes and reboot the machine. The virtural memory still defaulted 20MB.

Is it possible to edited the Pagefile.sys?

Thanks

From Micosoft.xp.hardware:

There is no "clone protection device". First I notice you say that if you try to set the pagefile size in Virtual memory section then click "Apply" it doesn't stick. Are you pressing the "Set Button" before you click Apply. If not then try that as the Set Button must be used after
you make a change.

If you have an intel chipset you might need to download a driver from the intel site. So check there as I think there is a known issue with some chipsets and the pagefile doing what you describe.

Finally it is possible that the pagefile has become corrupted. You need to delete the pagefile and then reset it. To do this first ensure you have the Explorer->Tools->Folder Options->Views set to "Show all files and folders" and also disable "Hide protected system files". Next go to
the Virtual Memory section and select the option for No pagefile. Click the Set button and OK out then reboot. Open your C drive and delete pagefile.sys. Revisit the Virtual Memory section and set a pagefile or allow Windows to manage it. click the Set button and OK out then reboot.

Note: The Intel driver referred to is their "Application Accelerator" that fixes some problems with their IDE bus chipset.

Hi Bcastner:
Deleted the Pagefile.sys didn't work for me.
I deleted the Pagefile.sys from Start->Search->For Files or Folders ->system drive (C:\) "Pagefile.sys". Then I rebooted the ThinkPad the system start to create new virtual memory, afterward I went to System Properties -> Advanced->Performance options->Change and entered 400MB for the Min and Max click Set button then click OK.
I rebooted the ThinkPad at the desktop a virtual memory dialog box show your virtual memory is low (20MB)but why is the virtual memory value I set 400MB for Min and Max + 20MB total 420MB.
When I set the virtual memory on other system I didn't have the 20MB issue.

I'll look into Intel website

Thanks, you have been helpful...

Solution:
Add Administrtors to your local drive user account <C:\Properties -> Security ->Add Administrators and apply then OK.

Set the virtual memory to your spec.
