Trying to set datasource thru CF Administrator and
getting the following error in CF Administrator:
"The root cause was that: java.sql.SQLException: SQLException occurred in JDBCPool while attempting to connect, please check your username, password, URL, and other connectivity info."
I've verified the system dsn connects to the SQL Server
database successfully. I successfully set a datasource
to Access but can't get the SQL Server datasource to
work.

And you checked your username and password (sometimes it's the obvious things)?

Also, what version of ColdFusion are you running (sounds like MX?) and are you using the SQL Server drivers that were included with that version? Hope it helps,
-Carl

Yes using ColdFusion MX and using the default drivers when set the system dsn - problem is don't know sql server and don't know if the problem is the user set up in sql server is valid or not

I got exactly the same thing setting up developer version of MX, getting to SQL server on local machine.

What I did was first set up an ODBC to the SQL server in Windows ODBC Data Source Administrator. Then in ColdFusion Administrator Data Sources I Add New Data Source and instead of picking Microsoft SQL driver, I picked ODBC Socket and then selected the ODBC DSN created in the Windows ODBC admin.

I don't know if that's the best way to do it, but it is the only way I can connect to anything other than MS ACCESS.

The problem might be that you are using a Windows account, not a specific username and password created in SQL Server itself. Windows authentication won't work with the JDBC driver, so you'll have to create a user for CFMX to connect as in SQL Enterprise Manager.
