Hey all,

I have a user who is unable to send an e-mail to anyone outside of our network. At first I thought it was a forwarding issue but I just found out that he can't send a new e-mail either. Here's the error message:

The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by the server. The rejected e-mail address was 'username@url.org'. Subject 'Read: New contact info ...', Account: 'Jack', Server: '192.168.2.9', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '550 5.7.1 Unable to relay for username@url.org', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 550, Error Number: 0x800CCC79

He's accessing the mail server (Exchange 2k) with Outlook Express 6. I have other users running Outlook Express but they aren't having this problem, and I can't see anything different in the setup. I've double-checked to make sure the "My server requires authentication" information is correct and that the box is checked. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,

Joe Brouillette

It almost sounds like a DNS problem. Make sure that the DNS settings are correct for the user and then make sure that the DNS server is returning the proper MX information for the server to route the outgoing message. There is a good site to validate email addresses -

Good luck,
Larry

I just discovered one more thing. When sending e-mail messages the message goes into the outbox for the "Local Folders" and not the outbox for the IMAP folders. BUT, when receiving e-mail the message goes into the inbox for the IMAP folders. I checked and the server settings are the same for incoming and outgoing e-mail. Does that give anyone any ideas???

Thanks,

Joe Brouillette

Hi lhuegele,

I checked and the DNS settings are correct on the workstation in question. I didn't check the settings from the link you showed me because no one else is having the problem. Any other ideas?

Thanks,

Joe Brouillette

Joe,

Did you every find a resolution to this? I am having the same problem with 2003...

No. I'm going to upgrade him to Outlook 2k tomorrow and see if that takes care of the problem. Here's hoping...
