Have been monitoring other posts with much interest. But none of them seem to have my solution.
Running ipx/spx to log onto Novell server. Have tcp/ip on client to connect to wingate proxy server (internet connection)
I cannot see the linux box in the network neighborhood.
researched for days.
Settings on either machine must be bogus. Unable to find a simple example of a connection in any documents anywhere.
My problem is a 'no see um' :)

Linux box connects to internet thru the proxy wingate server and I can ping the linux box from the win98 box.

Thanks for your consideration.

i do assume that you have ur netbios name set in ur smb.conf right? Try posting ur smb.conf here...

Here is the smb.conf (I removed all the comments to shorten) Was created mostly by Red Hat.
This version 2.2

[global]

workgroup = CULLIGAN
server string = Samba Server
printcap name = /etc/printcap
load printers = yes
printing = lprng
log file = /var/log/samba/%m.log
max log size = 0
security = user
browseable = yes
encrypt passwords = yes
smb passwd file = /etc/samba/smbpasswd
socket options = TCP_NODELAY SO_RCVBUF=8192 SO_SNDBUF=8192
wins support = yes
dns proxy = no

[homes]
comment = Home Directories
browseable = no
writable = yes
valid users = %S
create mode = 0664
directory mode = 0775

[printers]
comment = All Printers
path = /var/spool/samba
browseable = no
guest ok = no
writable = no
printable = yes

[public]
path = /usr
public = yes
only guest = yes
writable = yes
printable = yes

Thanks for any help you may give. (still trying not to have to purchase/use a Microsoft server) = :eek:)

i dont see where you declare your netbios name...did u accidently remove it when you took out the comments? If it was never in there then you need to add it or you'll never see it in network neighborhood

netbios name = <whatever you want the name to be>

Still doesn't work, But you're still amazing... this setting was not in the original file that red hat made on install!

I added both the ip numbers I am able to ping to the wins of the tcp/ip prop. of win98 box

Does it matter that I logon on using Microsoft client for Netware?

I'm not sure how to access 'MAN Pages' where are they. See it's the simple things that are overlooked. I've been using the net.

Countless hours later,,, but I'm still trying.
Thanks for the assistance

hmmm im not sure about the Microsoft client for Netware I have to think about that a little...

Anywho to access man pages at the shell prompt just do:

man <name>

example:
man samba

Read thru entire man smb.conf file. I still cannot see the linux box from win98 box.
winipcfg reports as follows

WINS Proxy Enabled (not checked)
IP Routing Enabled (not checked)
NETBIOS Resolution Uses DNS (is checked)

Is there a diagnostic tool to see if SAMBA is configured properly?
Any help is a God Send...:)

Disables #`=(^x@ Firewall to see Linux from Win98 box and dances the dance of joy......

Thanks for your assistance...
