Have a small home network comprised of 6 PCs. My main workstation houses many files that I may need while on a different workstation, yet for some reason I cannot access any shared folders on my main workstation from any other computer. I can, however, get into shared folders on other computers FROM my main workstation. I get pop ups saying "\\Falcon is not accessible. Login failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer." Falcon is the name of my main workstation. Funny thing is I can access all the others computers from each other, just not the main one. Is there a setting I am overlooking on "Falcon"? Any advise or help is greatly appreciated.

What's the operating system on Falcon? It sounds like a permissions issue.

Sorry for not giving that info... the OS on all the computers is Win2000 Pro.

OK, do the remote computers have permission to access these shares on Falcon?

Yes they do. At least they should. I took a look at the properties for each folder and then checked the "permission" tab and all three boxes are checked there: "full control", "change", and "read". Is there another way to check my access or permission values? Thanks a million, Smah, for helping me out on this.

Hmmm... under the "Security" tab, in the "name" window "everyone" is listed. Then in the "permissions" window all of the ALLOW boxes are checked, BUT,... they are grayed out at the same time. The little check box under the "Advanced" button is checked saying "Allow inheritable permissions from parent to propogate to this object". What that means... I have NO clue. But that box is checked none-the-less.

If 'everyone' is listed under security permissions, it must be your 'sharing' permissions. Make sure the account name and password on Falcon exactly match the Windows usernames and passwords on the remote computers.

Smah,.. I checked and they are EXACT. The thing is, if I click into "My Network Places", and then into "Computers Near Me"... I can see Falcon there, but I cannot even get INTO Falcon to see those folders. The moment I double-click on the Falcon icon, I get that annoying message. From the remote computers it never asks me for the username and password to access Falcon. And really it shouldn't I suppose, because on all the computers it is my name and password and ALL of them.. and as I said, they are exactly the same. Any more thoughts or ideas?

Possibilities:

The Permissions are not explicitely set in Group Policy:

In "Administrative Tools" -> "Local Security Policy" make sure that "Access this computer from the Network" contains the appropriate usernames/groups.
Also make sure that "Deny access to this computer..." does not contain the specific usernames/groups and that it does not contain all-encompasing groups like "Everyone".

Second possibility, a virus. There was an IRC virus that led to this result:

Third Possibility, you have exceeded the shares permitted under your license.

I was under the impression that W2K pro would only act as a "server" for a maximum of 5 clients.

If this is the case then you have one too many PC's on the network.
