I have a laptop that is experiencing a very strange symptom. It can boot up fine and shut down fine...but whenever I try to RESTART, the thing closes all the program and 'hangs' at a black screen. I have updated the BIOS, reimaged with the factory system restore cd's and then even tried reinstalling a full retail version of Windows 2000...but still I am unable to restart.

Please offer any suggestions for me to try.

Clear temp folders out , both locations. Put your system disc in and bring up command prompt. Type sfc/scannow and when it finishes restart(if you can). Then run chkdsk. Once that is done run defrag. Double check the items in msconfig's startup tab. After you do that see if restart works fine again. If not let me know for you might have possible malware.

I have reformatted the hdd with NTFS file system and then I tried both using the original System Restore cds and then the original Windows 2000 installation cd. Both methods resulted in the same outcome. The laptop would boot up fine and shut down fine. When I attempt to restart, all open programs closes and then the screen turns blank (all black)...and then it just hangs there until I power off the system.

Could this be a hardware issue? (motherboard/hdd) ??

Its possible but I think its a software issue. For even though your using the same windows file, the desktop uses different drivers and software then the laptop.

I am still unable to get my laptop to restart. Does anybody have anything else I may try?

How long do you need to wait before the laptop will boot up?

do you have a usb thumb drive plugged in when you reboot?

on my laptop some usb devices cause it to hang at a black screen while rebooting...
