unable to respond to XDMCP requests from another server 2

I currently have a couple of issues on a P660 running AIX v4.3.3

1) It takes between 30-60 seconds for a login prompt to appear in a telnet session. It should only take a few seconds.

2) The server seems to be unable to respond to XDMCP requests from another server.

There appears to be something stopping the system from responding to broadcasts. The system gets the broadcast but cannot find the system that sent it.

Anyone run into this ??

Thanks
Brian

Yes we have a Graphics card in the system and X11

How are you doing name resolution?
This can slow your login........ as well as patches for bos.net.tcp both client and server.

Perhaps you also need to look into an /etc/netsvc.conf file....creating one...
hosts=local,bind and getting patches....

The box I am going to is a new install and I applied all the patches from the AIX site...

I will try to explain this better...

I am trying to log on to the P660 using a Jump Server using Hummingbird.

Sometimes I will get a list of servers to attach to and sometimes none. it may take 5 minutes for a list of servers to come up..

When I get the chance to select the server it loops back to select a server.

Sometimes it will connect for one user but all other users at same location cannot connect. And if the user who got in signs off he cannot get back in.

The system shows that the broadcast has been received but it cannot find the host that sent the broadcast..

Thanks
Brian

Brian,

I got the same concern using hummingbird but can't really confirm/isolate what must be the problem:

I have 3 IBM RS6ks, 2 with graphic cards (AIX 4.3.x), and one just have the normal text/ascii/ibm3151 (no-graphic card, it's an old machine, AIX 4.2.x - I even updated this machine to AIX 4.3.3).

Anyway, I noticed that I can easily see these 2 machines with graphic cards on it when trying to hook it up with Hummingbird Exceed XDCMP from my PC.

Re dificulty in signing-in or re-signing to the system, you can check the number of users you are allowed to use for hummingbird - your license.

Btw, hummingbird tech support will not give you anything if you're not under their maintenance, even if you try to surf on their web-site....nada... even if you're using the trial copy. I've gone thru lots of pain with hummingbird.

'hope somebody got the right stuff to solve this problem.

We also have a old RS6000 that we can get to everytime...

Thanks
Brian

We use Hummingbird, too, and have sometimes similar problems
trying to connect to Solaris 2.6 SUN machines. What we then do is to send a HUP (kill -1) signal to the "dtlogin -daemon" process.

I guess, it might be not a AIX but a Exceed problem?

The issue seems to have been solved

AIX 4.3.3 requires reverse DNS lookups ours was turned off.

slayer666,

could you explain how you turned dns lookup ON? im just curious. i wanted the same thing for one of our server.

thank you.

on your DNS server NT4 create a reverse DNS zone and on the AIX system add the file that AIXQUEEN suggested....

Perhaps you also need to look into an /etc/netsvc.conf file....creating one...
hosts=local,bind

Thanks
Brian

Hello,

I am having problems connecting to my RS6K by means of Reflection : it is around 10 times slower than to the other servers.

I opened a new thread for that question (X connectivity problems); i don't know whether these 2 are related.

Luc

Just to expand on this a little

With AIX 4.3.3 a new security "feature" requires reverse DNS.

The problem was corrected by creating the reverse DNS zone only.

The problem with using only the following file

Perhaps you also need to look into an /etc/netsvc.conf file....creating one...
hosts=local,bind

Was that it would not fix the Jump Server problem.

If you are not using a Jump Server then AIXQUEENS solution should work for you (Thanks AIXQUEEN)

This corrected the following
1. Slow telnet
2. unable to mount NFS
3. Unable to see servers through Jump

sorry, maybe i didn't get it.

i have an AIX box running 4.2.1, i got this file netsvc.conf with "hosts=local, bind" under /etc FS.

how i'm gonna turn "ON" the reverse DNS?

under /usr/dt, i don't have the "config" dir instead "appconfig" & "lib"

do i really have to "create a reverse DNS zone" on my NT server? (i'm wondering coz i don't have access on it).

thanx.

p.s. i just want my rs6k available when running hummingbird exceed (XDMCP-Broadcast).

On the WINNT or where ever you have DNS set up you must create a Reverse Dns Zone

i got it - i think i have to talk to our MS windows guys, i don't have rights to change it.

thanks.

i'm thinking maybe i can just do it in AIX without touching windows' server.

I have a similar problem... but with an odd twist. When I do an XDMCP broadcast.. I see my server in the list. When I double click on it.. or click on OK.. the list goes away.. but I never get CDE.

Any ideas?

Just an FYI.. I know my Exceed is configured correctly.. because I can take my laptop to work. .and I can see and connect to all of our servers there.

Thanks,

Jason

That could be a problem with your profile. Does it happen for all users??

Thank you for the reply. I found my problem. Silly me over looked and missed a couple of the necessary filesets needed to run XDMCP.

Everything is up and working now! Thanks for the fast response!
