C:\>ipconfig /release

All adapters bound to DHCP do not have DHCP addresses. The addresses were automatically configured and can not be released.

Here's the funny thing... i've tried it with 3 diff cards (SMC, LinkSys, and Netgear). the netgear one, the OS automatically detects and installs the correct driver and it works fine. but as for the other 2, OS cannot find the apporpriate driver so i had to manually install them. unfortunately, i get the same problem from both. i've tried tcp/ip fix utility suggested from other posts but still no luck.

quoted from Can't obtain/renew IP addresses from the DHCP server

Symptoms: 1) you have a DHCP client which may not be able to obtain/renew IP addresses from the DHCP server intermittently. 2) after setup a workstation to obtain an IP address from DHCP, the machine can't ping others and ipconfig /all shows Autoconfiguration IP Address. . . : 169.254.x.x.

Resolutions: 1) If this is XP, obtain the latest service pack for Windows XP.
2) Use the Network Diagnostics tool to identify any failed settings. To do this, go to Help and Support>Use Tools to view your computer information and diagnose problems>Network Diagnostics>Scan your system. When the process finishes, check for any items marked "FAILED" in red, expand those categories, and view the additional details about what the testing showed.
3) Assign a static ip on the client and ping the DHCP server. If you can't ping the DHCP server, check the connection and hardware.
4) If you can ping the DHCP after assigning static ip, check the DHCP settings.
5) Make sure no firewall is running on your LAN.
6) Run Repair this connection if it is XP. Or use netsh to reset TCP/IP configuration.
7) If it is win98/w2k, remove and reinstall TCP/IP.
8) Try to upgrade the new NIC driver.

Hi. I guess you have a broadband connection which uses a cable modem. If that is the case, you need to remember that every time you change your NIC card, you need to powercycle the cable modem (power it down for about 30 secs) in order for it to memorize the Physical address of the NIC card it is connecting to. Otherwise it will only recognize the one for which it has a physical address in memory. I think that is your case. From your case description, It seems that the DHCP server can only assing a valid IP address to the netgear NIC card as it is the one that is in the memory of the cable modem. In other words it's the only one recognized by the cable modem.

If you have actually powercycled the modem everytime you change the NIC on your PC and you still get an IP 169.254.xx.xx address, then you just need to verify that the card is properly installed (it shows up in the Device Manager without error marks to the left). If it shows OK in the Device Manager then the next step is to verify that it is properly bound to the TCP protocol. Just make sure the IP Adress setting is set to "Obtain and IP address Automatically" in the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window. In the same window, check the Advanced button and verify that DHCP is enabled.

While doing the above troubleshooting, make sure that your firewall or antivirus software is 100% disabled, especially if you use ZoneAlarm firewall.

It is strange that you had to install drivers manually for the 2 NIC cards that you are having problems with, it would be advisable for you to make sure you are using the correct drivers, even make sure they are intended for Win 2000. this will probably allow the system to install them automatically.

Finaly, a useful thing you can do to check if the NIC card is properly bound to a working TCP/IP stack is to ping the loopback address (127.0.0.1). You should get 4 replies if it is working correctly. Otherwise it will come up with an error message that will give you new lights into the actual cause of the problem (such as a NIC driver issue).

Hope this information may be helpful to you.
If you already figured out a solution with a different approach and it worked out OK please let me know. Thks.

If you're on broadband, check with your provider - some will restrict internet access to one particular MAC address (the one of the original NIC when it was setup). If this is the case, you need to give your ISP the MAC address of the NIC you will be using.

<marc> i wonder what will happen if i press this...[pc][ul][li]please give feedback on what works / what doesn't[/li][li]need some help? how to get a better answer: faq581-3339[/li][/ul]
