I have a W2K Small Business Server (SP3), that is running Exchange and SQL. Up until last week, I have been able to use Internet Explorer to access web pages from this machine. I tried to use IE today and it says "Opening page", but times out and gives me "Cannot find server or DNS Error".

Exchange is still sending and receiving emails correctly.

If I ping the URL from DOS it resolves ok:
Z:\>ping Pinging tek-tips.com [216.45.19.33] with 32 bytes
of data:

Using IE, on this machine, I CAN connect to FTP sites correctly.

Using IE, on this machine, I CAN enter: file:///c:/test.txt and it opens the file.

Using IE on this machine, I CAN enter: and it's internal IP and they all display web pages correctly.

Using IE on this machine, I try to access another server on our network, and it says, "Cannot find server..."

All of my other servers and workstations are working correctly and can view web pages?

Would loading "Windows Media Services" on this machine caused this problem? I loaded it several months ago, but did not open it until recently. Can't think of any settings I changed to cause HTTP request to be denied?

Any suggestions?

TIA....

check in Internet Explorer your LAN settings. MAybe there is a proxy coniggured unproperly.
Also check your DNS and GAteway settings in your network connection, under TCP/IP properties. A+, MCP, CCNA

forget the last part, the problem must be in your IE, not on your network. Otherwise on DOS you will have the same problems.. A+, MCP, CCNA

This machine has IE 5.5 SP2 currently installed.

Do you think upgrading to IE 6 would help?

Any problems with IE 6 on a W2K SBS server?

In SBS2000, you need to configure the clients as a proxy to the SBS server, as ISA server is also installed.

Right-click on the IE icon on the desktop, go to properties, connections, LAN Settings, check the "Use a proxy server for your LAN", enter the name of the SBS server or ip address and port 8080.

This should clear it up.

FOLLOW-UP:

I fixed the problem yesterday.

I was preparing to reinstall IE 5.5 SP2, when I got a message that Terminal Services Server had to be in "Install Mode"? (whatever that means...)

So I disabled TS from running and restarted. Once the machine came back up, IE WORKED!!!

So I re-enabled TS and restarted again and IE still works. So I'm not going to complain!

Alright - this is driving me crazy!

Today, I can't use IE on this computer again. Same error message.

Anybody using IE6 on a W2K SBS server?

Russell

Correct - Access the internet on the server.

I originally installed ISA, but removed it several months ago. IE has worked successfully since then.
