Our server is unable to be pinged on the internet, although web browsing, mail delivery etc all work correctly. No configuration changes made apart from open relay settings altered. Any suggestions? Even our ISP cant ping it

Firewall/router blocking ICMP echo requests most probably.
Must have open ports 80 and 25,110 for web and mail though.

Good practice really :) - means you're less likely to get port scanned.

Cheers

I agree, good practice, however we havent configured our firewall to block icmp echoes. One minute it was working, the next it wasnt. The only changes being made to the server were MS Exchange 2000 settings to close an open relay. We definitely havent reconfigured our firewall!

Thanks for the post tho :)

Try Tracerouting to your web server from home or from somewhere out on the internet. See the last hop you get a reply from. It could also be that your ISP is blocking them for you. If you were subject to a DoS Attack, some IDS systems will iject a deny icmp for the host under attack.
