Unable to open Paradox 8 table in Windows 2000

I have a database that resides on the network. The clients are running Win95 & Win98. I recently upgraded a client to W2K. The W2k pc cannot open the tables on the network but the others can. I receive a message the the filename is invalid due to the long file naming convention.

After researching, I discovered that if I save the table to the local pc, I'm able to open it in W2K. However, if I rename the table to 8 characters, I can open from the network.

My solution is to rename the tables on the network but that's not an option.

Any advise?

LAIDYDEE23,

This is an odd report, for Paradox 8 can support long file names used judiciously. If you can open the table using Paradox 8 under Win98, then you should be able to open it using Paradox 8 under Win2K.

Now, having said that, there may be environmental change or configuration related differences between to the workstations.

Are you receiving a specific error message when you open the table under Win2K? If so, what's the complete text of the error? Also, if the [>>] button is enabled in the Paradox error message, what's displayed when you click it?

Based on that information, we may be able to help you resolve the error more quickly. At this point, though, it could be any number of things and I'd rather be specific than scatter hints wildly.

Hoping to help...

The error message I receive when opening the table under W2K on the network is "Unable to open table."

When I hit the right arrow at the bottom of the screen, I receive "Invalid file name. Table: T:\PDATA\FILE NAME.DB (The file name is approximately 30 characters long including spaces).

Thanks for your response...

Yes, the file is located on the network and the working directory points to the file.

LaidyDee23,

Have you tried applying SP1 to your copy of Paradox 8? I can't confirm this right at the moment, but I seem to recall it had some fixes for long files names. You can find SP1 at ftp://ftp.corel.com/pub/Paradox/paradox8

Also, try mapping a drive to your table's directory and setting your Paradox working directory to the mapped drive. I seem to recall some problems with UNC paths and don't remember which version of Paradox finally resolved those.

Finally, make certain you're using BDE 5.11 or later. checking this is harder than you might think; see for details and a link pointing to the update.

Hope this helps...

Thanks for the tips. I 'll try them and let you know what happens.

I vaguely remember that sp1 or 2 addresses the long file name issue. Good luck.

jlockley,

FYI: There was only one service pack released for Paradox 8.

Way too much Paradox trivia in my head. :)
