Hi,

I have a curious problem. User in our Madrid site are unable to contact their file and print server without using the FQDN. I can ping the short name with no problem but trying to map by the UNC or doing a net view or anything that initiates a connection will not work unless you use the FQDN.

Any help would be most greatful as its totally baffling as to whats happening.

Thanks

Siulong2002,

I had that on Windows 2003 box as well. Try disabling a feature called “Strict Name Checking” on the file and print server. Follow these steps (don’t worry, it’s not gonna break anything, but always back up your registry):

1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe)
2. Locate and click the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters
3. On the Edit menu, click Add Value, and then add the following registry value:

Value name: DisableStrictNameChecking
Data type: REG_DWORD
Radix: Decimal
Value: 1

4. Quit Registry Editor.
5. Restart your computer.

It worked for me.

Please let me know if it worked.

Michael

That seemed to do the job. i didnt need to reboot the server mind you.

Thanks again for your help!!

Update: Its actually failed. My colleague (cleverly) logged in with an account that had Domain Admins. This has always work for any account with these rights. Even stranger. I'm going to reboot the server now as i didn't do this yesterday. I hoping thats the reason for the FAIL :)

problem appears to be with offline files. Disabled offline files via GPO and it works.
