This is quite long so bear with me.

Had uninstalled a faxing software on a WinNT4 workstation sp6a and after some difficulty managed to removed it. However after this, I could not install any programs using both the local and domain administrator account. I had previously added in the domain administrator account in the user manager but it seems to corrupted now. In the user manager, it will show "domain\account unknown" with a ? infront of the head( if you know what i mean)

I did a system repair on the machine and now I cannot login to the domain with any accounts.... Error msg is " The system cannot log you on now because the domain MYDOMAIN is not available. When I tried to remove and add the domain administrator account in the user manager, I get the error msg "You may not be able to browse all of the domains to which you have access because the following error occured. There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request."

After the system repair, I have 3 profiles - administrator, administrator.000 and administrator.001. I can see the network and machines using the local administrator login and can also access them if I provide a user name and password. I can set the machine to workgroup and rejoin it to the domain without any problems, but I cannot access the machine from the server manager on the PDC. Error msg is "Access denied" when I click on it.

Is there a way to edit the registry to enable the logon process or what are the methods to resolve this. This is a last attempt before I recommend a reformat. Sigh.....

One error in the first post, the local administrator account can install programs, but not the domain administrator account.

Btw, where is the edit function?

Don't understand some of your post - eg, 'I had previously added in the domain administrator account in the user manager '. What do you mean by this? Did you add the domain adminstrator account to the local Administrators group?

Have you tried removing machine from domain then reconnecting it?

What Edit function are you referring to?

I must admit, I'd just backup & do a clean install on this machine.

The domain administrator account was already added to the local administrators group before the uninstallation of the faxing software.

Have tried removing the machine but still the same.

I was referring to the edit function at tek-tips. Cannot seem to locate this function to edit our own posts.

Does anyone know whether the utility netdom.exe or nltest.exe from Microsoft will help in any way?

You can't edit posts here - have to post again.

I've not used netdom (command line to add/remove etc machines from domain? - can't see why any different to doing through GUI) or nltest.
