I cannot log in as root as /etc/passwd file was chaanged from sh to ksh.' No shell'
Is there any way to change it back without booting up into single user mode ??

Try to login as a different user and do a su to root and try correcting the file.
Hope that this helps.

Hi bemine,

Your solution doesn't seems to work in my Ultra box.
Even when I trying su from different user , I can't able to login if I have a invalid shell in /etc/passwd.

Suresh.

If you do not want to reboot into single user mode the possible solution would be to create a user account with UID as 0 and do the necessary changes to the passwd file and then delete the user.

I did this a while ago, most frustrating.

Boot from CD, vi the passwd file, boot as normal.
