I USE A SHARED WORKSTATION AT WORK AND EVERYTIME I TRY TO SIGN ON TO NOTES IT OPENS NOTES BUT IN THE AREA WHERE YOU VIEW MAIL IT SAYS UNABLE TO LOAD DOCLINK DATABASE. THEN IF
I GO TO DATABASES IT WILL BRING UP AN ICON TO GO TO MY MAIL. BEFORE THIS EVERY WORKSTATION I TRIED TO SIGN IN TO MAIL ON WOULD COME UP WITH THE LOTUS R.5 BANNER FOR A SECOND AND THEN IT WOULD GO AWAY AND WOULD NOT OPEN THE PROGRAM. IS THIS BECAUSE THE NOTES.INI FILE IS POINTING TO THE WRONG DIRECTORY? ALSO WHERE SHOULD THE NAMES.NSF FILE BE?

THANK YOU,

TERESA

Teresa,
It sounds like you were established as a secondary user of Lotus Notes on the shared computer. With the setup you describe, it sounds like another user was given the primary access to the computer, which would mean that when you sign in and try to go to the "area where you view mail" you are actually trying to log into the primary mail account, which of course the computer would not permit for privacy reasons. Hence the "unable to load doclink database" message. But you would still be able to get to your own mailfile, which is why you could through "databases".
There are ways to create accounts for two users to utilize completely separate from each other, but the ones I know involve complete reinstallation with different destination. Someone else may tell you of a better method than I know.
In the meantime, perhaps I can give you something to speed up your access to your mail file. Go find and open your mail file. Once opened, look at the toolbar button where you would click on the "x" to close the mail file. The button probably reads something like "Teresa--Inbox". Use the right button of your mouse to click on that title. It should create a small menu. Choose "bookmark" from the menu. A pop-up window appears. In the box called "Add To" select "Bookmark Bar" and OK the change. An icon should appear on the vertical icon bar on the Lotus framework to your left. Clicking on it will take you immediately to your mail file. You may wish to open your calendar and To Do list to create the same for them.

Your names.nsf file should be in \lotus\notes\data and if it isn't, that would possibly explain why you aren't seeing the server. The names.nsf file has the address of the server and where your mailfile is. If you have got the file in the correct directory, look at the connection/location documents and check they are correct. If you are not the admin for your system, it would be best to get them to check the detail.

Multiple notes users on one PC:
Put your user.id file in the Notes folder (make sure it is uniquely named or you might overwrite an existing "user.id" file).

Go to File-User Preferences- check the box "Prompt for Location"

Go to File-Mobile-Locations- "Add Location"
Under the Basics tab: Location Name = your name
Under the Mail tab: rename path to your mail database to
Mail\(your)FirstMLast.nsf (default path will reflect
primary user's FirstMLast.nsf and must be changed to
name.
Under Advanced tab: "User ID Switch to: (icon with a flash
lite) Browse to your uniquely named .id file.
Click save.
Repeat for any additional users on that machine, each .id file named for that user.

Now when Notes opens, you will be prompted to choose a user. After clicking your name your logon prompt will appear and after logging on you're good to go.
