My user is an experienced Excel user, and often links cells across sheets. For some reason he is unable to point to particular cells with the mouse in one book. If he selects a cell above or below, he can then move to cell with arrow keys.

Anyone have any suggestions as to why this might be?

Check to see if FreezePanes or AutoFilter have been activated.

Never say Never!!!
Nothing is impossible!!!

I used to have this happen occasionally in 2000, and was only ever able to get around it using the workaround you mentioned. Never found out what it was, but just wanted to let you know that your user was not alone in this.

My guess is that there is an autofilter on that line
I also get that issue with excelXP

You might also want to see if protection has been enabled on the particular worksheet. In XP, you can put protection in place that will not allow protected cells to be selected.
