Purchased XP Home Edition, brand new. Purchased WD 80 gig. special edition 8 meg buffer, brand new. I then installed the hard drive as I have many times before, started up computer, inserted disk. Here everything is just fine until the point "Setup is copying files", it will reach 3 or 4 % and states it cannot copy XXXX file. I try again, same thing, but a diffrent file name this time.

I changed memory, cd drive, ide cables, check jumper settings, still the same outcome, unable to copy files.

Next, sitting beside this machine is an older clunker, so I install the WD 80 gig into it, start it up and no problems it sees and copys all files just fine.

Any idea? This has me shacking my head, never ran into this before.

The first machine is a Gateway and has had XP installed before though it initially came out with Windows 98se. It has plenty of memory for XP and worked fine with it before.

I hope I gave enough information, any help appreciated.
Oh, by the way hard drive was set as master and cabled as master on both machines.

thanks

Can you make a copy of the XP CD in the other machine or on a friend's computer?

"If you continue to receive this error message, copy the i386 folder from the CD-ROM drive to your local hard disk (perhaps while the hard drive is in the other computer), and then try to run Setup from your hard disk".

Silly thing but what happens if you reduce the size of the partition and install it? I have a colleague who had problems with a Packard Bell machine, he reinstalled from scratch but used the entire disk, no luck in installing at all but as soon as he reduced the size of the partition he had no issues. Apparently this was a known issue with the Packard Bells and was all over the forums.

SimonD.

The real world is not about exam scores, it's about ability.

Thanks linney and SimonD I will give your replies a try & post back.

you can also try since it is a new Hard drive, get to the Command Prompt (DOS) try redoing fdisk then SHUTDOWN not restart, then format, Win xp will not load in dos like win98 did. If your not sure how to do the above applications holler at me I'll walk you through

I've gotten that error several times in the past. I just used a Win98 boot disk and repartitioned the drive using FDISK. I also reformated the drive as well after partitioning. Never really thought about it, but I would think you could skip the format part.

There are 10 kinds of people in this world, those that understand binary and those that do not.

It's been my experience, to shut down after fdisk, then do Format. the way I do it my be overkill but haven't had a problem yet.
1. (if you type C:\fdisk /status (enter), it shows status of all partitions)
2. Format, then fdisk using win 98 startup floppy. Be sure that a partition has been set.
3. Shutdown, powerup
4. Format again.
Do you get a message when in Dos.."unable to read media"? when I check out used or new harddisk, I always go to dos c:\dir (enter) it'll either show directories, orthe other message above, then I know where to start.

let me know how it goes

Since you have that Gateway Thing open...

take a look at the Capacitors...!!! For leakage and/or Buldging... if that is the case... get a new board...

I have received this error several times and one of these two things has always fixed it.

(1) Make sure the disk is clean and the CD Rom can read it.

(2) Change the memory. I purchased a bunch of Ultra memory from Tiger Direct. I had all kinds of problems installing XP (stopping during copying of files) until I replaced it with some good stuff.

Thanks,

Shannan

I thank all of you for your replies.
Here is the sad solution to my problem, after trying all of your suggestions I was unable to find my problem until I tried my 4th set of brand name memory sticks. I must have changed every component twice in this machine to no avail, then in desperation tried one last memory module and everything cliked, no more problems. I had brand name memory, not junk, just blows me away.

I have an old workhorse computer I use for testing drives and such and I swear you can put any junk memory in it and it is happy, go figure.

thanks to you all

Glad you found the culprit...

I would like to know the brand name of that RAM you are using aswell as the mobo involved... just for future reference...

I was having the same problem today and after switching out the ram, the problem is no longer an issue.
