This one has me stumped. I recently acquired a new computer at my office. I installed VB6. Installed the VBSP5 (I thought). Installed all outside source dll's, ocx's, etc... Then moved my projects to the new machine.

The app loads fine into vb6. It runs fine. However when I try to make an executable, it goes through the compile process, goes about 3/4 of the way through writing exe and then I receive a System Error and the exe is never written to disk.

I began to check my references and components and while they were all there, some were out of date. Meaning that it appeared VB SP5 never installed. So I re Installed the SP5. Again my components were out of date. And under the Help About where it shows the Service Pack number, I don't show anything.

I have checked my user and it does have Administrator permissions. Does anyone know of any other reason, anything else I can check?

Thanks for your help,
Dave

I dunno but there is also a SP 6 available, maybe that would help?

I uninstalled VB6, reinstalled then I downloaded the service pack 6, installed, and it still made no difference. I'm at a loss....

Is it only this one project that won't work or you cant make any executable?

None of the apps will create the executable. It seems that I can't get the service pack (either 5 or 6) to install. All of my controls show only up to SP4. For some reason, (it seems - I may way off base), I can't get VB6 to recognize service pack updates. And I know for sure that some of the controls need at least SP5. I'm hoping thats my problem, but I can't figure out WHY the service packs won't show up.

The following registry key should tell you what service pack is installed.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio\6.0\ServicePacks

Are you installing as administrator?

Two strings walk into a bar. The first string says to the bartender: 'Bartender, I'll have a beer. u.5n$x5t?*&4ru!2[sACC~ErJ'. The second string says: 'Pardon my friend, he isn't NULL terminated'.

Hey Dr,

Under the .... \VisualStudio\6.0 there is no service pack entry at all. There's Packages, Services, Setup, ToolsOptionPages, and toolwindows.

I'm not installing as administrator, but the user does have administrator rights. I'll come in as administrator and see if that makes any difference....

Logged in as administrator and installed the VBSP5. Still nothing shows up in the registry. I'm stumped.

Just to make sure you are installing the right stuff did you download SP6 from here?

Hi Dr,

Yes, that's where I downloaded the service pack from. I may just reinstall XP. Whatever is happening the registry isn't getting updated with the service pack and if that's the case, then there's no telling what else may be not quite right. Makes you miss the INI days, sometimes..... *sigh*
