Unable to install AIX V5

Hi folks,

I've been trying to install AIX 5L for Power V5.1 as well as V5.2 on an "7044 170" box containing AIX V4.3.3.

But whenever I try to boot from V5 CD the system hangs ...
Whats wrong there ? Any ideas ?

It even says something about

Loading AIX V5.1 or Installing AIX V5.1

But that's it.

This happens when the Machine are old and they do not have updated the Firmware. Go to the webpage of IBM Tech-Soport and Download the Firmware.
I hope that this solves your problem

Still the same problem when I'm trying to boot from the V5 CD...

You have to upgrade CDROM microcode, call IBM support or visit IBM site.

Hi,

As LuchoTB suggests some AIX systems many not boot from CD-ROM running AIX 5.1. Check the firmware level

lscfg -vl cf? ?=0/1 depending on cd number

if your CD part number is 04N2964 and your ROS level and ID is less than or equal to 1_04 you NEED to upgrade your CDROM
firmware. To get this you probably have to call IBM

Hi folks,

it's a 32x CDRom and I even found a microcode update at

http://www.ibm.com

Only problem is, that this update needs some utility called "genucode" ?!

But that only supports 40x CDRoms as well as AIX V5.1+ and no AIX V4

When I try to run the command

genucode -s cd0

it says

Return Code -10 -->> Download Failed

What's wrong there ?

Any ideas ?

Download microcode for 40X and genucode
