First post for me, trying to help a neighbor out.
Running Windows98SE, earlier this week her Internet stopped working. I found a program "Xupiter" running on the machine and did my best to remove it. It will still not run IE6. I've tried reinstalling Windows98, IE6 setup cannot function since it can not get out to get the download and the IE6 fix does not help.
I can network and ping addresses but if I try to go to a site I get the "Cannot find server" & "This page cannot be displayed"
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
John

How does she connect to the internet? Dial-up, cable, or DSL?

As for Xupiter look at my post linked bellow on software to get rid of Spyware.

Thanks for the quick reply!
Cable modem connection.
I built this system about 5 months ago. I have a router and an 8 port switch in my house. I can ping the router and Yahoo etc. but no web pages will be displayed
Thanks again

Is the cable modem plugged into the WAN port on the router and the computer into one of the LAN connections? Do you have other computers on this network and are they able to get through the router to the internet?

On the Win98 machine;

1. Start\Control Panel

2. Click on the Network icon

3. In the box labeled "The following network components are installed on your computer" make sure you have your Network card listed, Client for Microsoft Networks, NetBEUI>-Your network card, and TCP\IP>-Your network card installed.

4.Highlight the TCP\IP>-Your network card and click on the properties button.

5.IP address tab select Obtain an IP automaticly

6. WINS Configuration Use DSHCP for WINS Resolution

7. Make sure no gateway is installed.

8. DNS Configuration Choose Disable.

9. Click OK and let it reboot.

If you are connected to the router you need to make sure the router is setup to be a DHCP server. Also shut down the computer, turn off the router and modem. Restart the modem then turn on the router and reboot the computer. If none of this works try hooking the computer straight to the modem shut both off and start the modem then reboot the computer. If it works, then the problem is with your router setup.

Tried everything and ran direct through the modem but still the same thing.
I get this message across the top of the IE page
res://C:\windows\system\shdoclc.dll/dnserror.htm
I've compared this computers settings with the others that are on the LAN and can't find anything different.
Really appreciate your help.

Have you tried calling your ISP tech support? I'm at the end of my limited expertise.

Makes two of us Jeff. Called a friend that's an tech-engineer for the cable company. He suggested the same ideas and when I told him that they failed to fix it he suggested a clean wipe and reininstall. I'm in the process now of resetting up the hard drive, first I did a mirror copy of the drive to save files.
P.S. just got the drive loaded Win98se and clicked the IE icon and it went right through.
Really appreciate your kindness
John
