I installed a second cdrom (burner). Bios see it on boot up, device manager, properties, general tab shows Device status of "This device is working properly". Settings tab has disconnect, auto insert, and dma selected. The current drive letter assignment in the settings tab shows E, Start and End drive letter shows E. My other cdrom is drive D.
My problem is I am unable to see the drive under "my computer". I only see the C HDD and the D 1st Cdrom.

Physically I have tried it as the master on the primary and secondary controller. I completely removed the original CDROM, hoping the new would grab the D assignment.

Besides this I have removed both drives from device mangager. It puts them both back on reboot but does give a letter to the second. I added lastdrive=E to config.sys and rebooted.

I've never had tweakui installed before. I just installed it, all the drives are checked, I tried unchecking E and rebooting, didnt help. Rechecked it and rebooted.

I also tried forcing it to drive H, wondering if Compaq IPAQ somehow was taking the
E letter but not showing it.

I also did a find in regedit for NOIDE but nothing came up.

I went out and purchased a replacement second drive just to make sure it wasnt a hardware issue. The new drive also did not create an entry in My Computer.

One note, the first time I booted after installing the drive, the system froze. I dont
know if it somehow update some registry or something that is now not allowing it to
be seen.

I'm stumped, thanks for any suggestions!

If device manager is seeing it then the setting are right. I would try to set the first and last drive to blank. Also in device manager highlight the drive and click properties and make sure that you have a driver loaded, Should show the name of the drive and Microsoft as provider and a date. Since your system froze during install it may have not loaded a driver for windows to see it. (did you have to insert the windows cd?)you can update the driver and select from a list or search for new driver (not sure what you'll need to do but you get the idea). William Pike

This sounds like the LASTDRIVE statement in the config.sys is set to "D" and not "Z".

Go to the VEIW button on the tool bar and then to the folder options if you are using Win 98 or to Tools on ME and uncheck hide all files. Sometimes the Config.sys is hidden.

Open it up in either Notepad or Wordpad and check for the line LASTDRIVE=, if it shows D or E change this to Z.

The default for this is usually E in most cases but I have seen it come up as D.

Hope this is some help to you.

Thanks for all the good suggestions. The system does have a driver loaded for the drive, 5-11-98 from Microsoft. I went to their web site and looked for some type of updated device driver but did not find any. This is a fairly new CDRW so thought they might have some type of update. I also checked the TDK sight. I also checked each dir on the cd that came with the device for a driver.

Config.sys was set to run in msconfig, the lastdrive was set to E. I changed to Z. I also tried forcing the new CDRW to drive R, just to make sure it was way out of the letter lineup.

I did install the NERO burning software and also ran an update for it I got from TDK but the drive would not show.

In winfile.exe it does not show the device.

One interesting thing, in device manager, the first cd device shows with manufacture and other info "CREATIVE DVD-ROM DVD1241E". The new cdrw just show "(CD-Rom Drive)". Does this mean anything?

If I <del> into my BIOS on bootup, the BIOS returns the full manufacture name and id TDK CDRW161040.

I appreciate everyones responses, I had the question out on another board and didnt receive any response after 4 day. On Tek-Tips I got 3 overnight!

Try this:
Open Device manager, select CD-ROM and highlight your CD-ROM (not the CD-RW).
Click on Properties, then the Settings tab. Change the start and end drive letter to R (for Read).
Click OK, but don't restart, just yet, go back to CD-ROM highlight your CD-RW this time. Click Properties, Settings, and make the drive letter W (for Writer).
Click OK all the way out, and restart.
See if that fixes it up.
Remove the "Lastdrv=*" line from config, it doesn't need to be there at all. Cheers,

just an additional to the last answer. Windows 9x dosen't need the config.sys at all I have a blank config.sys on three computers, unless you are running dos apps it's useless. everytime something writes to the config sys I go in and delete the lines (but that's just me) the more important thing in 9x is the win.ini If you're useing 98 go to the run menu and type the word msconfig and hit enter, you'll get a panal that will show tabs one of which is win.ini You can also open the win.ini in notepad to edit it. It might be worth installing 'tweak ui' as this allows for some adjustment. it is include on your win cd but is not supported.

strangely i had this problem last week but was setting up something else at the time. then, during one reboot win just recognised the cdrw as if it was a new drive !

its been fine since.

spooky.

Hello again try this remove case and disconect all ide devices put hard drive on ide 1 and burner on ide2 (that is one device on each cable) boot up see if this cures,

Tim (and everyone else),

Thanks for your help, you got it, I flashed the BIOS on the ASUS AV7 MB from 1004D to version 1007 and the new TDK 16/10/40 CDRW drive showed up in "My Computer"!

THANKS!
