Were having some problems with our weekly and monthly backups. We have 4 weekly and monthly tapes in rotation, we run the weekly's every saturday and the monthly's on the first sunday of every month. There mainly for data intigrity, at first we had them in media pools, this worked for the first time the backup ran but then failed the following week. We then tried putting the tapes into weekly and monthly groups, again this worked the for the first time but failed again on the second. Both media pools and groups come back with an unable to find media for this job error. I have "Overwrite Same Media Name, or Blank Media First, then Any Media" selected for both fisrt and addition backup options.

We have daily jobs set up aswell, Monday to Friday and they all run fine.

Any ideas on what could be causing this?

Or a better, more reliable way for me to set the backups??

We run Win 2K Server with Arvserve 11 and a 'Dell PV-132T' tape libary, we have all the arcserve patches and latest firmware for the tape drive.

First off, we need details on whether you have setup either a custom or GFS rotation, or whether it is just a custom repeat job.

If you are using a custom or GFS rotation then the overwrite same media name.... etc is completely irrelevant as it doesn't apply to rotations.

Depending on the type of rotation you have setup will also depend on the number of daily, weekly, and monthly tapes that will be retained before you will be allowed to reused/overwrite them.

Hi,

Just create one rotation job with 5 day incremental and FULL on Friday for instance. Provide the media pool name.

Start with all Blank media. The job should take care of creating the media pools and auto "piloting" the media movement.

Hope this helps..

So far it has been repeat jobs, it’s been a while since I’ve really used arcserve and not to sure about the GFS rotation. For the weekly backups, they were set to 'repeat method- Days of week- every Sat', monthly were set to 'repeat method- weeks of month- first Sun'.

Our backups at the moment run twice a night through the week, backing up exchange and user data, this uses two different tapes, these have worked fine since I first set them up. The daily backup tapes are always in the tape drive. I used the same backup plan for the weekly backups however, the weekly tapes are removed from the tape drive after the weekend for data integrity, so there is only ever two weekend tapes in the drive (One for data, one for exchange), and the same slots are always used for each, data & MTA backup. I tried to set the monthly's up the same, only difference is the repeat method, again only one of the 4 sets of tapes is ever in the drive, the other 3 from both weekly and monthly backups are kept away from the servers.

Hope this explains it a bit better.

Would I be better stting up a GFS rotation?

Again, if you could help me with a better solutions, feel free,

Thanks,
