Has anyone else had this happen to them?

I am running BrightStor 11 on a Windows 2003 server. I run a custom backup schedule, 2 jobs a day on one tape, 1 differential, and one full backup. (..Backing up different files.) The other day, the first job, set to run at 9pm, failed with this message in the Activity log.

So, 'UNABLE TO FIND ANY MEDIA THAT CAN BE USED IN THIS JOB'. But tape was in drive....and it ran the second differential job at 11pm perfectly ok. Eh?

Oh, and it worked fine last night!?!

This all seems rather unreliable - (still running in parallel with old backup system), - and so I am concerned - how do I know when and where ArcServe will decide whether to recognise a tape from one hour to the next??

If anyone can shed some light on why it didn't recognise the media for Job 1 but was happy for job 2, or any similatr experience, please let me know!

Thanks muchly,

Loafster

Need to know how the job was setup, append, overwrite, a specific tape, or *, that type of stuff.

Hi, thanks for replying.

Ok, the tape was labelled TUESDAY, the destination media is set to * for both jobs, it's set up to "Overwrite same media name or blank media" in Options for First Backup Media for the first job, and Append for the second job.

The Additional media options are also set to Overwrite same media name or blank media, though I don't think this is too important, as only using the one tape.

If there is anything else you need, please let me know!

I have append, use any tape then blank media chosen, my auto-loader tape library is online (I use a SONY AIT 30 tape library) and if I turn all the engines in the job watcher screen off then on again I can run a job manually, but the scheduler has completely crapped out giving me the same errors you are getting.

I am experiencing this same issue. Our jobs fail with E3831. This new setup on BAB11 is two weeks old. All patches have been applied. I have several groups setup across several libraries. It'll randomly fail on a different job. Our workaround has been to reboot the server, then restart the failed job. Almost sounds like a problem with ASTASK.

Is a media pool being used?
It might have been that the tapes where all in the Save Set and then the next day a tape moved to the scratch set and so the job ran.

I've found a workaround for my problem, if I manually move tapes from the save set back into the scratch set, everything runs ok, so its almost like something is wrong with the function that controls the GFS setup.

Probably all you need to do is change the retention time &/or # of media to save, so that tapes will move to the scratch set sooner.
