unable to enter setup,unable to scan disk and defrag 1

i m unable to enter setup in my computer.i m using windows millenium edition in my comp.its config is pIII 733mhz,64 mb sdram.i aslo unable to scan disk and also it is not defragmenting the drive.on trying to defragment,it shows "disk utility in use,please close and then try again."
i tried again after closing all the programs which run in background,disabled norton antivirus,but still its showing the same.

hi,try selecting "none" for screensaver window in desktop properties.

Try running ScanDisk and defrag in Safe Mode.

thanks a lot paulwood but i dont know how do enter in safe mode.i know a hit and trial way-by closing the computer before windows has fully loaded and now hwne the computer starts it will start in the safe mode.
but i know thats not the way.can u please tell me how do i do that.

Press the F8 key when you see the "Starting Windows" message, and then choose Safe Mode from the Startup menu. You may have to do it quickly because the message doesn't stay there for long, but if you are ready when the bios messages are finishing you should get there OK. I normally hold down the F8 key until I know it's registered, the computer may beep, but it doesn't cause a problem.

thanks ,at least i was able to reach that display
I pressed F8,it is showing as follows:
1.normal
2.----
3.safe mode
4.step-by step confirm.

but i m unable to select safe mode.
the num lock,caps lock and scroll lock lit one by one and it is not accepting any input from keyboard.
i tried F5,i tried arrow keys,i also tried typing 3 butit seems it is not accepting and i am to press the reset button inorder to start my computer all over again.
thanks a lot.

thanks a trillion paulwood,
i m very very thankful to u for ur help.i was able to scandisk and defrag my hardrives thru this link.i m very relaxed after that.i dont have words to describe how relaxed i m.thanks a trillion again.
though i dont know much about computers as i have started with java recently,but than also i m ready to help u if i any case u need me.

If you haven't already tried it, try running ScanDisk and defrag in Safe Mode. See above posts. If it doesn't work do come back.

If findfast is running in the background be sure to disable it. Every time it kicks in it will stop your defrag.

Another tip for Win98 users:

CLEAN DEFRAG:
To defragment all your hard drives/partitions with no overhead (background programs running or TSRs/VXDs loaded), change to the \Tools\Mtsutil folder on your Win98 Setup cd-rom, and right-click on Defrag.inf. Select Install.

This will create a one-time entry (DEFRAG.EXE /ALL) under this Registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServicesOnce

Defrag will start automatically next time you boot, before the login prompt, therefore before any other program loads.
