Unable to edit actionscript assigned to a button

Hi,
I have a button with a getURL action assigned to it. I needed to change the URL of that button but can't. When I go to the symbol in the library, open it, then open the actions menu, I get a message that says "the current selection can not have actions assigned to it."

I had the same problem last week and ended up creating a new menu and new action script just to get the job done. But now I have the same problem and I'd like to know why. I can see the button and the actionsript in the movie explorer ... how do I edit it?

I'm relatively new to Flash and actionsript, perhaps I'm just missing something??

I’m using Flash MX (vs6).

Assign the AS to the instance of the button on the stage - not in the button creation timeline.

Find that button on the timeline and right-click it to open up the Actions - Button window. If the script is there, just edit that script...

Or post a link to your .fla.

my problem is that i put the action on the button and not on the instance of the button. thanks.
