I am not able to download anything from internet, but i am able to browse web pages. I don't know what i messed up. I messed with drivers during scsi controller and scanner installation. I did not install them right yet. that question is for later. Can anybody suggest what could have gone wrong and a solution for that. The cable modem is fine and i verified with the provider too. The os is windows 98

If you're using Internet Explorer 5.5 or later, then use the IE repair tool in System Information/Tools to fix it.

If that does not work, then uninstall and reinstall IE.

If still no luck, then try this program:
Scroll down to the DAP Basic d/l link for the free version.

Or you could open Internet Options (control panel), hit the security tab, then the custom level button and scroll down the list to the 'downloads' heading, ensuring file download has been enabled. My suggestions are what I would try myself. If incorrect, I welcome corrections to my rather limited knowledge. Andy.

You didn't say what happens when you try downloading. Any errors, blank page, etc?

I prefer Ski's suggestion of DAP - works just fine - and I'd also upgrade to IE6.0 with the latest security patch if you're using an older version. If you have set the security lebels to default, then I would ask if you have a firewall stopping you from downloading?

I tried all the things that ski suggested but i still have
the problem......I think I will download IE 6.0 and try again today .....I think the problem is with transfer rate.
I tried by downloading the executable and installing messenger from the directory instead of the browser...I still have the problem...I am able to download small files say upto 1MB...like in a minute or so.....that says there is no firewall on the machine...

Any more suggestions to improve the transfer rate ....

Are you able to browse for long periods? i.e. an hour or so. If not, have you recently uninstalled ZONE ALARM?

This may have something to do with your "heart beat" - a reply from your PC to your ISP upon request. If it has gone, then your ISP will reallocate your IP to another user and assume that the link you have is dead (no heart beat=dead).

At quieter periods during the day, your ISP may not request a response, but at busy periods, there may be a request every 5 minutes or so.
