My CEO is having issues with his e-mail. He has a laptop running W2k and Outlook 2000. The Exchange server is exchange 5.5 sp4.

His Deleted Items folder says it has 84 unreaded messages and over 1000 items. When I click on the deleted item folder I can't see any messages. "There are no items to show in this view." So Outlook is telling me that there are no messages in the folder, but I can see that there are some item in the folders list.

When I try to delete from the folder I get this message.
"Some items could not be deleted. They were either moved or already deleted, or access was denied."

Is there any way to fix this problem? Any help will be great.

Have you tried to remove his profile and re-add it? -Brad

2 ideas:

First, there's no filters applied to this view is there? Click on View -> Current View, and make sure it's set to messages, not 'Unread Messages' or something else like that.

Second, you could log directly into his mailbox using the Exchange client. Numerous times when I've had problems in the past with Outlook not behaving (showing 1 unread message when the folder is empty, etc) logging into the mailbox with the Exchange client (exchng32.exe) allows me to see things properly and delete them accordingly.

Hope this helps,

I had the same error message recently, although mine was with archiving. It turned out NAV for Exchange server was locking messages with attachments so you couldn't move them.
I enabled "Scan attachments in background" on NAV and the next day all was OK.
After updating virus definitions NAV was seeing attachments scanned with the previous definitions as not scanned.
Another work around is reopen problem emails. This will rescan that mail with the new defs. Of coarse if you have a lot of emails, opening them all can be a real pain.
You can use the preview pane for this, but not just "Mark items as read."
Hope this helps

I have the same problem with about 40 users.
They had been Exchange Client users.
When we moved them on to Outlook (9x,2000,2002) they could not see their items in their inbox using Outlook.
They could see the items using Exchange.
We tried changing veiws with no success.
The only solution thus far has to delete their mailbox and re-created.
