In Win2k, I have some files (movie .avi, larger than 300 Mb, in a My Documents folder) that I cannot delete or rename or compress or move in Win Explorer, nor in MSDOS (have not tried moving), nor in PowerDesk: message says sharing violation, may be in use. Others (same type, 3 Gb)I cannot delete in Win Explorer but they delete perfectly with an MSDOS command - I thought I had this solved until I ran into the first group.

What is going on?

Let me guess.. the file name starts with "con." or something. What you have to do is rename them using the posix path, that is "\\.\c:\docume~1\user\mydocu~1\con.xxxx.mov" After renaming it this way, it should allow you to delete it. ________
Remember, you're unique... just like everyone else.

Well, no - it does not start with con. etc The file name is something like xxxxxxx1.avi As I said, I cannot rename it in Win2k or DOS: I get the same "in use" message as with trying to delete or move.

\\.\c:\docume~1\user\mydocu~1\con.xxxx.mov - I am confused - is this a dos command? Is the idea to rename the extension from .avi to .mov ? What is the \\.\ ?

I too am having a similar problem. In the past I was able to delete the files from across the network on another Win2k OS computer, but now I can't even do this. Seems like NT4 and Win2k pro are both troublesome with this sharing violation problem. They won't release a file to be deleted when they should and they also have a similar problem with folders. I do notice that it happens with files created by an Adobe product a lot. I can't remember a specific time when it has happened with files created by another vendor's product. I really like Adobe products, but this makes me wonder if it isn't somehow associated with the problem.

I found some solutions on the web like "reboot and go into safe mode and delete the files" or "Delete from dos mode" but I'm sure there is a better solution somewhere. Any ideas?
