Unable to define join

Joined this forum a while back, this is my one of my first posts so bear with me.

I've just added some new tables to my catalog. I have a header and a detail table. The keys are the same on both, so I'd like to use that for the join. Not so difficult...

BUT I am unable to join on the particular field I wish. The
"Add Link" button greys out as soon as I select the field I want to join from/to. I tried to simply type in the join in the definition box -

schema.table1.field1 = schema.table2.field1

but as soon as I clicked ok, all was lost and forgotten. Impromptu will not let me create the join! I'm sure this is something really simple, could anyone enlighten me?
I'd understand if the data types were different, but on the same two tables Impromptu will let me create a join between two completely unrelated fields (a qty and a string value) so that cannot be the reason.

I'm pulling my hair out here, I just can't work it out...

Will anyone save my forlorne follicles???

The only experience I have with Joins not being available is when you are running XP on Impromptu before MR1. XP is not supported on prior versions, and the join problem is one of many that may occur.

Thanks griffin, but I`m running 2000 Advanced Server. Still can't create the join and I'm at a loss. So's my hair. Can anyone suggest something I can try? Maybe I should log a call with tech support, but I don't want to find out it was something I could have fixed myself....

How about a work-around of aliasing one or more of the tables that wont join, or inserting a bridging table ?

Thanks for the suggestions, I`ll post if I get a result with cognos support.

Are the data types of the fields you are trying to join the same ? Impromptu will not let you create the join if they are not. I have also found problems adding links even when they are the same type and that playing around between the join screen and test joins screens can usually get around it.

What is your database? I've found you can get this problem using SQL Server if you don't do schema leveling, which is a technique I've been meaning to do a FAQ on.
