Unable to connect to host using telnet

We are getting the following error message when we try to do a telnet, and have also checked the telnet daemon which is running fine.

Unable to connect to host hp02base

Tried to check the telnet port, the following message appears:

telnet hp02base 23
Trying...
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection refused

Woyld appreciate someones help, thanks.

what does the entry for telnet in /etc/services say?

telnet 23/tcp # Virtual Terminal Protocol

I am not sure if you have already found the answer for this, but make sure that telnetd is able to run. Check the permissions on the file. I believe this process is run by root. This is the daemon that the telnet connection runs through.

You should also look in the /.rhosts file, (its a hidden file) to see if the workstation that you are telneting from is there. By getting connection refused I going to assume that the host tables in /etc/hosts are good and the IP addresses are being resolved.

Hi,
I am not sure whether u have found a solution to the problem . Please check the secondary security file for telnetd. It is located at /var/adm/inetd.sec . This should be having a list of entries(system names) that is allowed to telnet to the system under question. Please check whether the system name from which u r trying to telnet is available in the remote systems inetd.sec file .Hope this resolves the problem . Good luck !
