I have been trying to load win98 and when it gets to reboot to loading the drivers and configuring it freezes on the win98 logo screen.I can get into safe mode but it says `you can't load drivers etc in safe mode reboot and select normal mode'
This PC ( shuttle SV25 is doing everything incredably slowly. It takes ages and ages to do anything yet the hard drive works perfectly on any other PC I have tried it on.

Could I transfer the HHD to another PC boot it and finish configuring setup on that PC then put it back in the shuttle to reload the right drivers

Update
I have managed after 5-6 attempts to update system settings but when it loads the win 98 logo page it immediately crashes and reboots?
After detecting the drives it halts for 2 minutes before continuing to post normally but then boots ino safe mode If I bootin normal it crashes again the instant it gets to the win98 logo screen

Is there anything I can do in safe mode ??anybody?

Anybody ???///
I used safe safe mode to recover a missing file setupx.dll I have now got to point where it boots to win98 logo screen and simply hangs . The usual moving colour band at bottom of logo is fixed.

Someone please help I was up 5 hours last night /morning trying to fix this and no responses. There are techs answering 2 month old queries on the forum this morning????????

Howdy:

Have you disabled the on-board (BIOS) anti-virus program??

Murray

good point yes I did every time I reset bios to default settings I went in and disabled antivirus and changed boot sequence to floppy,CD ide0
I can get into safemode but not sure what tools I have I can use to finf the problem?
I thought it might be a missing/corrupt win file or possibly driver issue but now not so sure

I have tried this drive on another PC and evrything runs at normal speed but put back on the shuttle it slows down to a crawl and sometimes takes 2-3 minutes to process various bits like it hangs after detecting drives for 2 minutes before going on through rest of post

Thanks for responding

Suggest you start with a clean slate.. Fdisk to remove all partitions, and then once again to set the Primary DOS partition. Once that is done, format the partition and then try your install again.

Murray

too much work gone into to this problematic install to abandon now.5 hours+
format seems to be the standard answer these days to everything. Thanks anyway but there must be a few other things I can try first before going through the whole process again.

no its a spare which works fine on any of my othre PCs which makes me think this is a problem specific to the Shuttle SV25 mobo especially as it processes everything so incredibly slowly It seems to hang for ages after verifying drives then moves on a bit and hangs again after verifying DMI pool data then eventually moves on again.

I setup win98 on the HDD again using another PC it works fine as normal on this PC with no problems at all

I transfered the hard drive to the shuttle and once again it loads the Windows logo screen momentarily then immediately reboots into safe mode.

This has to be a recognisable fault and someone must have experienced this before and know the reason. I will just have to keep leaving messages in other forums and trawl the microsoft help pages

The only thing I can tink of is some nasty driver failure .. beit motherboard drivers (which would have a real nasty conflict if you set the hdd up on a different system and then moved it over. Motherboard drivers would be totally wrong) or video card!!

Murray

Symptoms also for hardware problem (eg, RAM, video card, mobo, cpu ...)

Have substituted external psu and speed dramatically improved so have found part of the problem
I have installed win98 6 times with 3 different proven HDDs now on this shuttle system and it will not get past the windows logo screen before it either hangs or reboots into safemode ?

Is it possible the bios is screwed or corrupted? I have reset it many times but no improvement. I could get a replacement from `badflash' I guess.

What other piece of hardware do you think could cause these symptomns?

It could be ANY piece of hardware - usual approach to this problem is elimination (remove as much as you can - if no good, start swapping out what you can't remove - with known good alternative - assuming you have access to such. Ram is a common suspect - if more than 1 stick, try each on its own. Otherwise get good one from elsewhere).

mmmmm I have my doubts really.
If it was a problem with the memory or graphics card It would either be present all the time or happen randomly and its not, it is happening at precisely the same point in the windose installation /setup every single time so I think I'm goinf to discount hardware as the source and concentrate on software, bios and drivers. Thanks all the same
