Unable to complete a boot-up

When I turn the power on to the computer, it gets part way into the boot, and then it locks up.&nbsp;&nbsp;When I go through the process of loading one line at a time, it hangs at the &quot;Load all windows drivers&quot;.&nbsp;&nbsp;I have tried to go into &quot;safe mode&quot; and re-install windows, but for some reason in &quot;safe mode&quot; the system does not recognize my CD-ROM.<br><br>Any help is appreciated.

You cannot load the CD driver in safe mode . Try going into safe mode and checking in settings- control panel -system for any conflicts with the hardware . you will see a yellow ! next to an item . (Make sure you have the driver software first) Try removing devices from the system setup one by one . If you need to use the CD rom then leave this device installed . Next time you boot up in normal mode you will be asked do you want to install this previous device driver you removed if your system boots up ok&nbsp;&nbsp;. Try typing rem in front of commands in AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS in c:\&nbsp;&nbsp;to isolate problem and reboot .<br>I had a virus scan program that was crashing a P.C and it worked when I removed program via the control panel . It worked also when I used rem in front of the command line for it in autoexec.bat .&nbsp;&nbsp;

If Windows fails to boot properly, press F8 while it boots for the Windows Sartup menu, and pick the Logged (\BOOTLOG.TXT)option. It attempts a normal boot but records the status of every step Windows takes during the process. You can use this option to log a failed boot. Then, reboot to safe mode if necessary and use a text editor to open BOOTLOG.TXT (in your root Directory). Search for &quot;fail&quot; to find the boot steps Windows had trouble with. Failed steps are often excellent clues to the cause of the problem(s). This will help you to eliminate some of the frustration and get you going in the right direction.

If you are getting the WIN98 splash screen and then a black screen with flashing cursor then you may have trouble with your vga card turning from vga 16 color (splash screen) to whatever resolution and color depth settings that you have. One trick that may work for you is to edit you msdos.sys file and add logo=0 in the file at the top. This , in effect, allows your computer to bypass the vga 16 color splash screen and boots staight up to your win98 desktop resolution and color settings.<br>Good luck!!<br>ROBB

To get CD-ROM support in safe mode, load the CD-ROM driver in config.sys and MSCDEX in autoexec.bat.<br><br>Then follow the suggestions by other respondents.<br>
