I am using Exchange 5.5 and Verias 8.6 on a NT4 bdc.

Due to a server name change I reinstalled Exc 5.5 and am now unable to back up several mailboxes.

During the backup it will process several mailboxes and then fail on particular boxes. I will get a Dr. Watson message reguarding 'BENGINE.EXE exception violation (0xc0000005) address 0x6faac867' the job log will state that it was unable to find the directory for that user. The job engine service will stop and I am unable to then access the log file for that backup.

If I don't backup that user it will process more mailboxes before coming up with the same error.

I have the account in the admin group and as a exchange admin.

Any help would be appricated.

Assuming that you are using BackupExec, go to the Tools/Options/General tab and uncheck the "Display Progress Indicators for Backup Jobs" checkbox. There is a known problem with the prescan failing on mailboxes.

It is already unchecked.

Is BE running on the same server as Exchange, or are you backup up remotely? And what's the exact error in the job log?

Use Exmerge until you fix it :) Dan

I am getting there, I used Exmerge to export the mailboxes prior to changeing the server name and reinstalling Exchange.

I had already deleted and recreated the first culprit mailbox but had used Exmerge to put back the messages before trying the backup which failed on the same mailbox. I ran scanpst on the pst file created by Exmerge, which passed ok. I deleted and recreated the mailbox again this time only sending 1 test message to the account so it would be available to back up, this time it backed up ok but failed on another account so I will have to repeat.

I think there must have been something corrupt in the mailbox.

I have this problem too, and it also started after carrying out a huge exmerge of mailboxes to a new server. It seems ok on some mailboxes, and on others it will either Dr Watson (same error as above), or sometimes it reports the following in the Backup Log:

Unable to attach to \\SERVER_NAME\Microsoft Exchange Mailboxes.
The device cannot be found.

Unable to attach to \\SERVER_NAME\Microsoft Exchange Mailboxes.

I've read through ALL relevant KB articles on the Veritas website, and NONE of them applied or helped. Anyone know of a fix for this? Surely Backup Exec isn't supposed to be quite so choosey or random??????? :(

Thanks for your help.

Adrian

It would appear that the backup account does not have access rights, are you backing up the system state? and if so is this successful.

I had exactly the same problem with being unable to backup the system state so see the URL below, you may be able to relate the info to the mailbox problems

Cheers

Adrian,
Have you discovered the cause of -
Unable to attach to \\SERVERNAME\Microsoft Exchange Mailboxes
The device cannot be found

I am experienceing it too and also found similar issues at the Veritas KB but nothing that addresses this error.
