Hello!
I have: Compaq PL5500 Server; Win2000 Server; HP SureStore DAT 40x6i Autoloader; AS2000 AE SP4.
When I backup data (~35GB) from a several servers (ML 530; PL5500; PL2500) to one 40GB-Cartridge – it’s OK!
And when I backup data (~26GB) from one server (ML530) to one 40GB-Cartridge, ARCserve demand second blank tape. ARCserve formatted second blank tape as sequence 2, but writing all data to fist tape.
Also occur when I backup data (~14GB) from one server (ML530) to one 24GB-Cartridge.
Why AS needs second tape?
May be don’t work AS compression?
Thanks!

Pavel,

Is it a 20/40 GB tape or 40/80 GB tape?
What is the tape drive capacity?

Regards,
GSC

I'm sorry!

20/40GB Tape (HP SureStore DAT 40x6i DDS Autoloader)

It depends on the source data - the 40Gb assumes a 2:1 compression ratio. If the source is easily compressed, for example many database formats, you can get >10:1 compression. If the source data is already compressed, e.g. Zipped, you will only get 1:1 compression, so your 20/40Gb tape would hold 20Gb.

Yes, I know!
But ARCserve formatted second blank tape as sequence 2, but writing ALL data to ONE tape (first). And second tape to remain blank.

Oh yeah, I just read your original message again! I missed the bit about the second tape being blank. If you do a Restore by Session and choose the second tape, does ArcServe list any sessions at all?

If i get this right then arcserve asks you for a blank media and when you mount the blank media into the tape drive the backup finishes? or?

Regards,
GSC

All sessions will be contained in first tape.

I have Autoloader with 6 cartridges. And AS formatted next blank tape automatically.

How about if you back up a very small amount of data?

If I back up a very small amount of data or appropriate capacity (<12Gb or <20Gb) to one cartridge – it’s OK!
AS demand second tape in spite of writing all data to first tape.

Very odd! Does ArcServe format the second tape when the job starts, or when it finishes? Could you copy the relevant portion of the log file here?

Pete

Did you try to use another DAT system ?
Becaus i've got quite the same problem and we found that the DAT engine was in trouble. I send it back to HP.

I can tell you flat out, you are trying to backup data which doesn't easily compress, like *.tif etc. We went throught the same scenario and it would request a new tape at 35GB on a 35/70 DLT. One of the servers was changed to store fax images. By removing this server from the job, the backup went on as usual, handling 65GB. I suggest you take a look at the data that you are handling in that job.

Pavel -
You need to look into your tape log and see why AS2000 thinks it needs to span (In order to turn the debug on you use Server Admin). I can help you if you are not sure how to read it
Did you check the FW of you device on the AS2000 Certified Device List? (just make sure the FW is newer than what they have there. If it is older, that may be your problem)
Are there any errors in the Activity Log that happen when the span happens?
my email is saguna1993@yahoo.com
cheers
