Unless I'm missing something, Visio cannot do actual code generation, like Borland's Together. Does anyone know of a free (or cheap) add-in to Visual Studio that can do actual code generation from a diagram? (or diagram exsiting code for that matter.)

I've been using Enterprise Architect for the last 6 months. It's not free, but it genrates code from diagrams in several languages, and can read and parse your existing code and database schemas to import them into your model. It also generates HTML documentation and RTF documents from your models.

I've used Rational, Popkin, and Select before this, and EA is easily the best of the bunch, mostly because it all appears to have been designed by the same company, rather than being a collection of bought-in products that have been rebadged as an integrated solution. They normally reply to any support queries overnight (I'm in UK, they are in Australia) and I have been really impressed with the product and the level of support. We have the Corporate all-bells-and-whistles version, and it's still only about $100 USD!

That sounds pretty reasonable. When I get a chance, I'll have to give it a look.

assuming you have enterprise edition of visual studio, have you tried the 'Microsoft Visual Modeler' that comes free? This does exactly what you want; code generation from UML diagram and visa versa.

It is actually a cut down version of a larger (and expensive) package called Rational Rose that steve mentioned in his post.

This site has an good list of UML tools:

Another vote for EA. For what it does, it's an excellent value.
