Ultra1, solaris 8, system crashes to prom ("ok" prompt), test-net internal loopback hangs forever, full-duplex light on hub sometimes goes off, system operates fine for days between problems. That's the basic summary.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Go through your /var/adm/messages files and see if you can find where the system crashes. You can search for words like fatal, panic, or error to help locate the panic string. If that fails, most reboots contain the string "Solaris 5.8" or something. Look for whats called the panic string and search on sunsolve.sun.com or post it here.

Good luck

You've probably solved this by now. For what it's worth,
the early Ultra1's had a cooling fan on the cpu that caused
a lot of trouble.(noisy, slow down, run a while and stop)
cpu would get hot and crash the box...New U1s have a big
heat sink, no fan....

My Ultra1 does have a fan on the CPU, so maybe that was it. The problem seems to have stopped, but the only thing I did was change the keyboard/mouse.

Could the keyboard and/or mouse have been the problem? It sounds quite unlikely to me but it appears to have been the case.

Thanks

Yes, A problem w/ the Keyboard or cable could cause trouble.
Any failure that results in breaking the KB connection will take
the machine to the OK prompt. However the prompt should show
"type Go to resume". That is where you end up following a "stop A"
sequence, which sends a "break" to the system. Your KB might have
been sending something really strange......
