Hi, guys

My Compaq Presario 2170US notebook's hard drive has just failed. I am thinking about replacing it with a new one.

I checked the HP website, but the price for a hard drive that exactly matches that one shipped with my notebook was unbelievably $425.00. Honestly, I was SHOCKED by this price, as it was almost enough to buy a new one laptop.

I did some online research, and found that most notebook internal hard drives are below $100. But I am not sure if I should buy them.

The specification for the hard drive on my notebook is

ATA/100 EIDE
4200 RPM
2.5 inch form factor
9.5mm height

I see my hard drives with EIDE Ultra ATA/100 Interface. What would happen if I install the "Ultra ATA/100" instead of "non-ultra" one?

And It seems that hard drives with PRM less thenn 4200 are very rare nowadays. Can I install those with greater RPM, say 5400?

Thanks

as long the drive fits in physically there´s no prob to get the cheaper one, it´ll run.

Some specs list a drive as Ultra ATA/100, others just list it as ATA/100. There is really no difference.

As long as you get a 2.5 inch drive, you'll be fine. Though I wouldn't buy directly from HP, I'm willing to bet a phone call to them would list that drive at a different price. What's on their site is probably outdated (at least you would hope it was).
