I have an HP Ultrium with 20 slots. When I look in BE it tells me Uknown Media under devices, robotic libraries, slots. I am able to initialize with no problems. I see the Ultrium moving so I know there is connectivity. I rebuilt the server last night and installed all new and upto date drivers. What could be going on? I did download HP LTT tools and was able to write to this drive. But Veritas told me that these tools aren't accurate. We have another HP DLT backup that is working. They are using PCI SCSI cards. These 2 did work together before I started working for this company.

Thanks.

I would also like to add that when I do an Inventory, is stays on running and theres no action in the Ultrium. I don't hear or see anything moving....

Is this an HP library you're working with? If not, please tell us the model of the library.

Some things, I would think about:
1. does the library have a management interface?
2. are the firmware revs up to date on the robot and tape drive?
3. is the robot set for Random mode?
4. do you know the SCSI IDs of the items on the bus?

This seems to be a common issue. Give us some more details so we can try to help you figure it out.

Yes, it's an hp surestore 2/20 using Ultrium LTO 200 GB catridges.

Now this device does have a fiber connection. Would that be better?

I'll be back with the info.

How did you put the tapes in the library (hand load or use Veritas Backup Exec Import command)?

-SQLBill

Hand loading caused me problems. It seems that Veritas sometimes has trouble with figuring out how they got there and what to do with them. Kind of like: "Where the heck did those tapes come from? I didn't put them there?"

Try taking them out and using Veritas' Import command. It'll be a bit of a pain because you can only do a few at a time.

-SQLBill

After you hand load, you are able to successfully initialize the library, correct?

What happens if you right-click the 'Slots' on the library and select 'Scan'? Does right-clicking on a specific slot and selecting 'Refresh' have any effect?

I think this is the direction the SQLBill was heading in.

It's very difficult to find a manual on this library, since it's been d/c by HP.

BTW-the procedure is:

1. Find out how many slots you have in your library 'mailbox'.
2. take out all the tapes
3. go to the Devices tab in BE, click on Slots
4. highlight the same number of slots as you have slots in the mailbox.
5. right click and select IMPORT
6. BE will pop-up an alert saying to insert media
7. open the mailbox door and insert the tapes
8. close the door and click on OK in the pop-up
9. after the tapes are imported, inventory them.
Repeat 4-9 for the rest of the tapes, highlighting empty slots.

-SQLBill

We have 20 Slots. I will try this. I'll be back...

Man, I've done so many things but I did what SQLBill told me to do last and everything is working fine now.

Thanks everyone!

Glad I could help you...bottom line is that when the tapes were put in manually - you knew they were there and what they were, but Veritas had no clue how they got there.

-SQLBill

I have an Ultrium 215. I am having a problem with the open file option. The reason I mention this, is you may want to check to see if you have your SCSI controller congigured correctly. I have two SCSI controllers on my server. I am only using one (specifically purchased for the server).

Yea, you know what? I have two too. I had to reconfigure them also. We have two backup devices. I used SCSI ID's 2 and 3 for both. Here is the config. This was important.

NOTE: I used 2 and 3 because that's what Veritas recommends.
Controller = 2
Drive = 3
