UK Broadband ISPs 1

Can anyone offer any help here?. I'm in Edinburgh, Scotland, and am looking for a broadband provider. My first choice would be Telewest/Blueyonder (a. unlimited service, b. i wouldnt have to have a phone line). I'm, as yet, unsure as to whether telewest can serve my building. I have a BT line in the flat, but it's not active, and i have no real need for a phone service. are there any ISPs who will provide me with an ASDL service without me having to pay BT a line rental of £11+ a month?

I've never seen one that doesnt say "BT line required" (dont know why its just BT though)

However, the very nature of ADSL is to use phone lines for data transfer - so without having a live telephone line, there is no line for the ADSL connection.

So basically I would say that it was highly unlikely.

yeah, after a bit of reading and a few phone calls i pretty much established that to be the case cyberspace. i suppose it makes sense really.

fortunately i managed to get a telewest line installed and am now happily connected, phoneline-free.

Plus you won't have the woes of signal degredation if you are not within spitting distance of your ISP!!

If I could get cable where I live I definatley would....10mbit is much more appealing than 2....

having said that, i'm apparently being upgraded at the end of this month!

BT and Telewest are the only propritors of phone lines in the UK. You have either one or the other
Blueyonder broadband doesn't require a phone line as it runs on deddicated fibre optic cables, and is not sync'ed with the phones lines at all, however they do nrmally share the same junction box for maintenance. This is NOT ADSL. Any ADSL Service requires an active phoneline and a registered number, whether you have a phone line rental with any other company, your line rental still goes to BT (even if you seem to be paying a 3rd party supplier, they are just leasing the lines). You do not need to have a phone contract with BT, as long as you have an active line.
