Hi,

I am 35 and have been working the majority of my career on the AS400/Iseries using RPG. There is a good possibility my
current job of ten years will go by the end of next year.
To my horor, there doesn't seemd to be many AS400/Iseries
jobs about these days in the UK. The only ones I spot are out in remote areas.

Have any AS400/Iseries guys and gals out there come to the same conclusion? If so how did you deal with it or how do you deal with a situation where your skills are no in demand?

I have self taught myself ASP and hope to do the same with SQL server or VB in the next year. My fear is, it won't be enougth.

It depends on what you want to do next.

I'm guessing you have a substantial amount of experience in IT and have no doubt worked on a lot of projects and as a result have amassed a good knowledge of business practice in the field in which your organisation operates.

In spite of the different brands of technology and so forth at the end of the day the user requires a system to do a job without really caring whether it's built in VB6 or .NET or java or even mainframe.

Have you thought about becoming a systems analyst or business analyst, something like that which will be a way of using the knowledge you've built up but the application of the knowlege will be a bit different than it is at the moment.
