When using this command to write to a tape device there is no problem, though when writing to another disk the command fails when the output file reaches 2Gb. Is there anyway to allow it to create files greater than this?

Which Solaris version? Is the filesystem you're writing to largefile enabled?

It's not volume manager - it's the filesystem you have mounted , the mount command will show largefiles against filesystems that are largefile enabled - I believe the standard ufs mkfs and mount options assume applications are largefile aware. Veritas I think assumes nolargefiles by default and needs to be changed "/usr/lib/fs/vxfs/fsadm -o largefiles /filesystem
" and remounted specifically with the largefiles option set (in vfstab). May be different prior to Solaris 2.6 when 2Gb limit was lifted.

You can also get around the 2 GB limit with command:
limit filesize unlimited

Using Solaris 7, will try limit filesize unlimited, when I run mount the following is returned:-

ulimit -a shows filesize as unlimited, so unsure what else to try.

ulimit -a shows filesize as unlimited, I'm out of ideas.

Wonder if this is ufsdump or the filsystem causing the problem, can you make a large file in the target partition?
e.g. mkfile -v 4000m /devbackup/largefile.

Upgraded the OS to Solaris 9 and the problem has been resolved. Must be a feature of Solaris 7!!!!
