Can I do a backup from a UC module running 8.1 and restore it on a 11.1 application server? Or do I need to upgrade the UC module first, then move it to an app server?

Depending on the complexity of the voicemail/auto attendant you could just export the .mdb file from the UC then import it to the app server. This would get you all of the auto attendant configuration, all that you would have to do then is to re-record the greetings. This is probably easier and quicker than trying to to upgrades on the UC to get it to 11.1 as you can only upgrade 2 software levels at a time going from 8.1 to 9 or 10, before going to 11.
I have never had any luck upgrading UC modules so if this was me doing this job I wouldn't even try.

I tried this with a 9.0 UC Module full backup restored into a 11.1.2.3 application server. Tested. No issues
I think going Linux to Linux isn't an issue, Windows to Linux follow the upgrade path. 11.0.4.7 first.

I was prepared to do a new install if it went south, so far 4 months and no reported issues.

If you can access the 8.1 module using WinSCP, copy over the Greetings, Names, Accounts, Wav. Also the mdb file.
You can copy these back over to the new app server. Make sure you change the permissions and ownership to the correct settings.
Upgrading for 8.1 to 11.1 will be hit or miss and take you 8-12 hours of your life if you can get the thing to upgrade even one step you are lucky.
Upgrade 3-4 steps. 12 hours. Or simply try my post above.

I ended up trying the upgrade straight from the UC module. The app server took the restore and looks like everything is working the way it should. Thanks for your replies!
