I have recently installed Exchange (bundled with NT / small business server, version 4.5)on our server, which serves four client P.C's running WIN98 and Outlook.

Problem is, we receive E-mails from our ISP no problem - i.e., E-mail is directed to recipients mailboxes as it should. However, outbound E-mails, from ANY client PC are sent back before leaving our LAN. The error message sent to the admins mailbox shows an E-mail address in the header nothing like the one typed in the "TO" box of Outlook. For example if I type: duncangrant@hotmail.com to send an E-mail to my private address, I get the following error message:

Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.

Subject: testing testing testing
Sent: 10/2/00 4:33 PM

The following recipient(s) could not be reached:

IMCEASMTP-duncangrant+40hotmail+2Ecom@*, on 10/2/00 4:33 PM
The recipient name is not recognized
The MTS-ID of the original message is: c=US;a= ;p=ECOTECHSERVER;l=SERVER-001002153309Z-2

Note how the address in this error message is not the same as the one typed in

If we use Outlook Express (via the Exchange server, NOT a direct modem connection), we can send out E mails no problem! (from ANY client PC)

What's going on please?

Duncan Grant

Hi Duncan, wish I had the answer - I have just started having this error also. Having migrated servers last week I have had a number of problems with connectivity (exchange is behind proxy) but I have finally got it going except for one thing - the recipient not known issue. I also had an error 550 - host unknown - appears that the exchange box is sending everything to itself only. We sned and reeive internally and cam receive internet email, but that's it. Telnet is ok and we use external DNS - also working ok.

I am still working on the problem and will let you know if I get the answer - I'm sure it's a simple one. Let me know also, if you sort it out.

I had this problem after changing to a new ISP. There are a couple of areas to check. First, are your DNS number correct for the ISP you are using? Second, do you have the proper POP3 and SNMP server names defined? And last but not least, does your ISP have your site name in their DNS table? I fought this battle for weeks only to find that our ISP had "accidently" deleted our name from their DNS tables. Once that re-entered our name, all worked fine. These are the only suggestions I can offer based on the information given.

Hi Duncan, as promised, here is my fix. First of all, my problem had nothing to do with the ISP - I knew that, but so many people told me it was the ISP's DNS that had to be the culprit - not so.
If you go into your Internet Mail properties (under connections) and go to the "address space" tab to SMTP properties and go to the routing address settings. In my case, there was an entry here that shouldn't have been. In your case I believe it could well be that you have an '*' listed there. I say this because of the 'corrupt' email address you described. What I am seeing there is your exchange forwarding email and attaching an '*' as the domain making it an invalid email address and returning it as such. If there is anything listed here, remove it, stop and restart the internet mail service and try it again.
Let me know if this helps - if not, I have a list of various tests (telnet etc) to help solve the problem.

Good Luck

Dear Lorraine,

Thanks - that's all I can say! - Thanks - its was the '*'- your assumption was correct.

Took all of a couple of minutes to sort out!

Thanks again!

regards,

Duncan Grant :)
