Type the first few letters in Outlook Contacts...

If you go to your contacts folder within Outlook (98 or 2000) and type the first few letters of a contact's name, it will jump to that contact. Great so far.

However, if I go to either a public folder or someone else's contacts that has given me delegate access, this facility does not work. I can live without it but I have a user that's raising hell because it used to.

The problem seems to have started when we decentralised our Exchange server. We used to have one Exchange server for the whole company but now we have three servers in three sites. Everything else works better apart from this.

I'm pretty sure there isn't an option in Exchange 2000 that says "Enable quick find of contacts by typing the first few letters for Public Folders and Delegate access!!"

Any help gratefully received! Thanks in advance.

When you start typing and Outlook completes the name, the names are stored in outlook.nk2 on the client. See if that helps.

Bottom line, this is an Outlook issue/setting, not Exchange.

I don't think it is an Outlook problem as this affects every user that's connected to the Exchange server. However, after further testing it only happens if both users are using the same Exchange server.

Let's say I have three servers in three different sites: EXCH1, EXCH2 and EXCH3. Users A & B are connected to EXCH1, X is connected to EXCH2 and Y is connected to EXCH3.

If A opens his own contacts, he can type a few letters and jump to the contact he wants. If X opens A's contacts he can do the same. Similarly if Y opens A's. It also works the other way around: A can open X's, type a few characters and jump to the relevant contact. A can also open Y's. The problem occurs when A opens B's contacts or B opens A's! They are both connected to EXCH1 and yet when one of them types the first few charachters, nothing happens - it just stays highlighted on the first contact.

Also, can I amend my orignal post as I've discovered that this does not affect Public Folders as I initially thought - sorry about that.

Finally, Zelandakh, I tried searching for *.nk2 files on my PC and it didn't find anything.

I appreciate you guys looking at this.

By default, the NK2 files are in:

C:\Documents and Settings\USERID\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.nk2

As for the Contacts issue, it really is not an Exchange issue, just a restriction in Outlook. Why, I don't know but it has something to do with rights. In your case, probably the rights on the folders, which reside on Exchange. Try giving one user FULL access to the other, temp. as a test.

Thanks for your response although I cannot see how this problem is an Outlook issue. It only affects users on one Exchange server and it used to work before we decentralised.

I have also tried giving full editor rights to a delegate for my contacts but still we cannot jump to the one we're after by typing in the few charachters.

I've investigated about the NK2 file and the reason I don't have it is because I'm using Outlook 98 and 2000 here. We don't have the AutoComplete function which is what NK2 files are used for...

davidpn, did you resolve this issue?

I have same problem with you. if you have resolve it, please tell me how to do.

My system is Exchange 2003 & Outlook 2003.

BTW, I can't find nk2 file either.

Hi there

Well, the problem has been solved but I have no idea how or by whom. I received a call from the user thanking me for all my efforts and to say that it was fixed despite my not actually doing anything other than posting this thread!!

I'd still be interested to know how to resolve the problem should it arise again so keep me posted with your progress and if anything comes to light at this end, I'll post back again.

David
