type as clipping path 1

I'm having a bad day and can't work this out – I want to use type as a clipping path.

I've converted it to outlines, and got my background (a series of colour boxes making a stripe pattern) and I want the text to act as a clipping path for it (so the text ends up stripey).

I've grouped both sets of objects, then pressed apple+7 but nothing happens. Where am I going wrong?

Try selecting the text, Object > Ungroup, then Object > Compound Path > Make. Now try again.

it just uses one letter as a clipping path... I don't know what I'm doing wrong!

Try it without converting the text to outlines.
