Type 2 errors with some 'net apps 1

My G3 has, for quite some time now, refused to open certain Internet apps. NiftyTelnetSSH and Opera 5 used to work just fine, but now neither opens, giving me Type 2 errors. I downloaded MacSSH recently and it simply locked up the machine.

Running MacOS 8.6, on a network with a Red Hat box, a PowerMac 7100, and an Amiga 3000.

From other threads here, I got the idea it may be something caused by Microsoft (the trouble may have begun after I installed IE 5), but even after removing IE 5 completely, I get the same errors. Any other suggestions? My G3 is my main machine for graphic work, and I really miss being able to ssh to the Linux box when I'm working on it... Matt

Have you tried upping the memory allocation to those applications consistenly failing? Also when is the last time you zapped the PRAM and rebuilt the desktop file on the G3.
Is this G3 a b/w yosemite or the older molar?
Or a desktop?
what's the RAM on this machine?
Type two errors, as you may already know, are memory errors so perhaps this is a memory allocation issue.

I don't want to assume you have any particular knowledge here so...

Up the allocated memory by highlighting the application icon and then pressing Apple-I or Get Info from the FILE menu..drop down menu to memory and you'll have to play around here with some different allocations.Up the Prefered Size only.

Zap the PRAm by rebooting the machine while depressing the Option-Apple-P-R keys till you hear three staartup chimes. Apple recommends that you do this from a shut down rather than a restart. After the three chimes....

release the P key keeping the others depressed until you are prompted to rebuild the desktop.

One other thought...do you have an Active X folder in your system folder somewhere?

Alas, I've done just about everything you suggest, with the exception of zapping the PRAM from a shutdown (vs restart, which I have done) and looking for an ActiveX folder inside the System folder... Will check those ideas out tonight. :)

It's a beige desktop, 416MB of RAM - and nothing else has any trouble to make me think the RAM itself might be an issue...The trouble is just with Opera and the two SSH utilities, which is what I find so puzzling.

I've upped the preferred memory for these apps up to 4x what's required with no luck.

If you come up with anything else, let me know... :) Then again, perhaps I'll reply tomorrow/tonight with a resounding Thank You!

Still no luck with zapping the PRAM from shutdown rather than restart. I did find an ActiveX folder in the Extensions folder, but wasn't sure what to do with it. I've already been through the Extensions Manager a few times, disabling certain things here and there... :/

Drag the Active X folder to the desktop (or the trash). I believe a new one will be created.

If it IS a Microsoft issue there's way too many steps to run through. here's alink to a MS support document that refers specifically to troubleshooting Office 2001 on the Mac but I DO think there's some valid stuff there for your situation.

Two other thoughts...a) dump the preferences for the apps that are malfunctioning. Macintosh HD | System Folder | Preferences

and try this one..Apple Menu | Control Panels | Extension Manager then select Mac OS 8.6 Base and click on the Duplicate Set button...then turn on ONLY the extensions for the apps we're dealing with..name the set and reboot. If we've got joy here then begin turning extension back on in the newly created set until pain, then you've found your culprit.

Thanks for all the advice! Finally found the culprit last night after I took the time to (yuck) REALLY investigate.

I thought I was sure the extension that turned out to be the problem had been working fine on the system from day 1, so I'd never even checked it... but I realized I'd never find it if I didn't do just what you said...trying extensions one-by-one...and there it was, after umpteen reboots... :) [It was the Suitcase extension.]
