I was given a Tyan Tiger 133 mobo. It is rev. C with a new bios v. 1.05 in it. The chipset is a VIA Apollo Pro 133A. The chips are vt82c694 and vt82c596b . Anyone out there with some insight on this board and what I might expect from it ? I've heard it was flakey. And is it true you must use ECC ram ?

Absolutely not! I run the Tyan 100 and 133 series motherboards in two computers that I have and I have NEVER had problems with them. Tyan makes one of the best and most reliable motherboards on the market and I have used alot of them. One is actually a dual processor board that gives me very good performance.

micheal64- Are you running a version C ? I've heard that the stable mobo's were ver F .
Thanks a lot for the input.

Yes, my 133 is version C. I have installed the latest bios upgrade to it and it runs like a charm. If you install the board and encounter any errors, this board is under warranty for 3 years so you could get it replaced. I only ever had to replace one board by Tyan and it was not a factory defect, it was a shipping problem.

micheal64- I have to know if it's true you have to use ECC ram. I plan to use 1.5 gig of pc133. I was told to use ECC and turn off the Ecc function in bios.

Yes, it supports 1.5 gbyte by using 512mb in dimm slots 1-3 with the last slot being empty. This particular board does not support ECC memory even though there may be a setting for it in the bios. My current configuration is 256 Mb unbuffered dimms in each slot for a max of 1gb. I'm using Corsair unbuffered non-ECC 256mb sdram chips running at PC100. In your case you would need to run 512mb chips at PC133 to get the desired 1.5gbyte. Knock on wood, I haven't had a problem with mine yet and it is going on 5 months old. I'm currently running a dual boot XP Pro and Windows 2K Server configuration on it right now and both OS's seem to be fully operational with no problems.
